Hey All,

I have a MKIV nav unit and the DVD I have is from 2007, is there a newer release that works?

The latest DVD available is the 2015 version. There are usually some for sale on eBay. Just make sure you get the version labeled as "High", not the "Professional" one (which is for the later in-dash nav units and won't work with a MKIV).

I bought the ebay ones recently. My Nav wouldn't read them but my laptop could. I copied the files to new DVDs and they now work fine.

That's what I thought so I ordered the exact set you're referring to and my nav will not read them. Any Ideas?

Is the old disc in your nav a DVD or a CD? When I got my car, the MKIV in it would read CDs most of the time (with an occasional error) but wouldn't read any nav DVD I tried in it. I ended up replacing the DVD drive in the unit (about $130 for the part) and now it reads my eBay DVDs just fine.

It's a 2007 DVD and reads fine, I just want the latest maps.

I used a free program called ImgBurn. First you have to read the ebay disks into files, then burn a new disk from that set of files. The program is pretty easy to figure out.
Some cautions. The blank disk must be a DVD+R. I used some Memorex blank disks from Walmart. Second, set the program to burn at the slowest possible speed. That's it.

The Nav DVD you just purchased...does it have the 11 digit BMW part nbr on it? Perhaps you purchased the wrong one (as previously mentioned. You can search the BMW part nbr on one of the online part databases to see which BMW models that disk was made for.

I purchased DVD maps in 2012 & 2014 (for my 2006 e53 X5)...but I shopped using the 11 digit BMW part nbr. You can see in the pics below that the one set says "HIGH" but the other says "PROFESSIONAL". Both sets were purchased on eBay (not oe BMW maps)...so you can probably say that the sellers mixed up the "high & professional"...but if you shop using the correct BMW part nbr...that (many times) can cut through the confusion.

You can find the compatible BMW part nbrs by looking them up in one of the online part databases like www.realoem.com or www.bmwfans.info or www.bimmercat.com .

The ones I bought said HIGH on them. If you do a Google search on Nav DVD reading problems there are lots of threads out there with others having similar problems.
It's the right DVD, but the MKIV is picky and won't read every disk, or so it seems.

I couldn’t get mine to read any DVDs so I just use a CD. Mostly I just leave it running showing the map and use the phone flor navigation.

You might want to check if your computer can read the DVD. One of mine from ebay had a small scratch. The first time I tried to load it it failed 90% of the way into loading. I cleaned it really well and was able too load the entire disk next try. If my computer couldn't read it the MKIV probably had no chance.

I'll ask again...do the disks you purchased have the 11 digit BMW part number on them...and if they do...what is the part number? Perhaps you purchased the disks for the CCC navigation system...and not the MKIV.

And whose maps are they? BMW sold the MKIV generation maps to Tom Tom (in the US/North American market)...if your maps were made by someone else...again, they may be for a different navigation CPU set-up.

Thanks...now we know what we're working with...and what we're working with are DVDs for the CCC navigation systems used on the e60/e61/e63/e64/e65/e66/e70/e71/e82/e83/e84/e88/e90/e91/e92/e93.

The disks you have are for all the next generation BMWs that came AFTER the e53. The e53's generational cousins are the e38/e39/e46. You need DVDs that work with the MK IV...looks like you purchased the wrong DVD maps.

The 2015 DVDs I've got are 65-90-2-365-699 (only slightly different part number from what you've got). They work fine in my MK4.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm having difficulties making a copy of my original navigation DVD disc. The original disc works fine and it's a Japan-market only DVD-ROM and not MK1-4 variant. I've tried making a copy on multiple branded discs and to no avail. Tonight I tried again using an old laptop with an old Roxio software on it to burn at x1 on a Memorex DVD+R, Fujifilm DVD-R, and Verbatim DVD-R. The last one is brand new from Amazon and the first two are 10+ year old blanks. Eventually the system catches it's not the right one and gives me a Disc cannot be read error once I remove the original DVD and put in a copy. Sometimes if it shows anything it would show all the nav menus, but no actual map overlay and other times just straight to Disc cannot be read error. I tried also using my brand new Dell DVD burner and ImgBurn on a Verbatim DVD-R, but again nothing that works. I'd like to get a copy of it in case I need it in the future if I have to replace the DVD nav unit (I have a backup that I haven't tested) as I've read sometimes these units need an original disc to boot up the first time. Also I like how it shows I'm in Japan on the maps even though I'm not, which is kind of funny. The original I want to keep indoors and not risk heat damage and it already looks like it has a crack where it mounts on a player, which you can see in the photo. edit: third photo is what it looks like when the original disc is in. When a copy is in, the map part is blank/black but all the bottom row options and time are displayed and the top left VICIS thing is as well.

While not the same, I followed Ryan's instructions for my MK3 and MKIV upgrades found here and had to also make the key CD to unlock the NAV after the unit upgrade and was able to without much issue at the settings he prescribed. He did another video about the NAV dvds where clones would fry the lasers on the nav computers themselves. May be worth exploring international eBay for the pn on your existing disc and setting alerts for one.

Wow! Thank you so much! I had no idea I was risking damaging the nav unit with a DVD-R disc. I removed the burned copy I only used last night and put back in the old to make sure the original still works and it does...now it's out to keep it from vibration and heat damage. The backup nav unit I never tested is from a 1999 735i and I'm not sure if the DVD is still in it...seller told me no DVD included but not sure how accurate that is. I tried finding a spare disc on Yahoo Auctions Japan and other 3rd party Japan sites and Ebay and no luck...will try contacting local and international BMW dealers next I suppose. Thanks!

Of course. The nav unit is the brain in the operation and the screen in the cockpit is just that, a dummy screen. I had a MK3 nav computer in my car when I got it and bought a MK4 unit off someone on craigslist from an E53 X5. It was plug and play for me with navcoder and using the obd1 port under the hood and a usb adapter to my laptop in conjunction with the above guide from E39Source. The E38 is slightly different to get the old nav computer out over the E39 so I used these in the holes on the two sides of the unit and was able to undo the connectors, move them to the new nav computer and then was off and running (referenced here). If I had to guess, you could probably interface and reprogram your existing unit with US settings but in an effort to preserve originality of the OE unit (if you care), would probably just be best to use your other nav unit.

Yes, I am aiming for originality with the car including keeping the Japanese FM tuner that barely coveres the 88 FM range in the US and nothing higher haha. The backup nav computer will be a last resort if/when the original fails and got a pair of those removal tools, too. It will either completely replace it or for parts when the time comes. Speaking of the dash unit, my dash unit scroll wheel for the menu stopped working when it was imported (worked before export). I swapped out the dash unit with a US model one to verify the nav computer was not the culprit and it was not. I will eventually get around to putting the original dash unit back in as I bought a new optical rotary switch or use the one from the donor dash unit as I think that is the problem and not the circuit boards in the dash unit. It was very easy to remove the switch as it's not soldered on. Pics of that in case anyone planning to keep a 4:3 screen runs into that issue. I'm probably the only person intent on keeping the 4:3 dash unit...

Btw Grayhill told me that part is not for sale except to BMW, but I found another with same specs they sell for $40 or so on Digikey. I haven't tested it in the car yet, but it's Grayhill part # 61C22-01-04-02. Has same 16 rotation position (the other option they sell is 32). Same pin number, same voltage I bet (5v) and same depress distance etc.

Very cool. I am a fan of mods that are reversible so if/when I sell any of my cars, I can remove them if the new owner doesn't like it. bluebus is a must for these cars which retains the OE setup but adds modern functionality.
