My husband drives my e30 almost as much as he drives his own car, well, he gets to test drive all sorts of vehicles since he travels a lot and has to rent. Last week they gave him a Prius. He was not impressed at all. Its a prius, so of course power and handling are going to be crap, but he claimed that he was only getting like 29mpg!!!! He claims he wasnt abusing it, coasting to stops and such. Maybe thats why priuses (prii?) are so rediulously slow, always 10mph under, and slower at acceleration than a semi truck with a fully loaded trailer. Their lame owners try anything to get their mpg up.
Anyway, a guy he was working with also wound up with a prius. He asked how my husband liked the car, and questioned how hard it is for him to keep his eyes from staring that the economy reader. My husband said... ..."yeah, um, my wife has that in her 21yo car" I lmao. Given the choice, he would probably pick my car, unless he was allowed to sell the prius, then hed just buy my car and keep the extra cash.![]()

That's really low for a prius. Not sure what was up with it, but I've been in one that got 45ish in the city with mid 30's on the highway. Wasn't too slow either, but hey, to each their own![]()
Depends on where you are driving. Havent you ever seen the topgear where they track the prius and an m3, and the m3 got better MPG. Prius shines in stop and go city driving and heavy traffic driving. If you use it on the highway alot its a pointless car.

it's not meant for highway. i've been in quite a few when i take car service from work and they all seem to get in the 40s. something must have been wrong with the one he rented. ride and handling wasn't bad, certainly better than those floaty lincoln towncars we usually get as limos. I wouldn't own one but I see the point in city driving.

A diesel gets better MPG than a Prius.
But 0-3 mph it'll out-accelerate a Ferrari!
I'd rather walk than drive one of those...... Yikes
i got stuck behind one of these yesterday morning. he had a priuschat.com sticker on the back and some sticker that said "blah blah mpg blah". i have never seen anybody accelerate so slowly in my life. the right lane was packed full, and i was gnawing on my steering wheel looking for an opportunity to pass this guy before i gave him an e30 suppository. the fact that i knew this guy was on his way to annoy somebody with boring chat about saving an extra .03 cents this week on gas fueled my anger even more. i ended up cutting some guy off in a jeep and gunning it past this guy. i look over and his face is shoved in his crotch while he's texting on his god damned cell phone.
times like this i wish i was driving a rental so i could smash into this eco-freak prius and the self rightous asshole "driving" it, pay the $50 deductible, and end the day with a sense of purpose in this world.
It takes a little learning to drive a Prius efficiently. I think Toyota offers small classes for owners to learn how to maximize the efficiency in city traffic. You are supposed to drive it differently than a non-hybrid car (as far as coasting/stopping/etc). But yeah. they don't have the E30 fun-factor...then again they were never advertised as being for fun anyway. I think the Prius has done a good job of demonstrating the usefulness of hybrid-drive technology in urban areas.
Oh well, should I decide to get a car for fuel economy, it will be a 2004-2006 Civic. I drove my GF's to Yosemite last weekend...there & back on 10.1 gallons of 87 (382 miles). Did 75mph all the way & was engine braking with her auto-tranny on the way back. A Prius doesn't do that well on highway trips.
I thought the Prius hating would have subsided after a couple years...guess not. It's a good car when used what it is intended for (and slow acceleration in stop & go, and leaving a big gap in front of you, is how you are supposed to drive it to take full advantage of it). Shit, in bad highway traffic I am always the guy who leaves a fat gap & lets 1-3 cars in at on-ramps. I'd rather keep a steady 5-10mph than do 0-20 constantly. The people who gas it to get one lane over as funny...I usually end up cruising by them at some point.

I have to echo that. I used to avoid getting behind an Intepid errr Intrepid at a light. Now the Prius is the car to avoid.
I used to get over 30MPG in both city and highway driving when I had a 1971 Beetle, and I wasn't even trying. What's so amazing about a car designed a half century later doing (very) slightly better while annoying everyone around them?
it's heavier than your 1971 beetle. all the safety regs in the past 38 years since have made modern cars much heavier, hence less fuel efficient. I don't think I'd ever own a Prius since a) I don't drive in the city - that's what subways are for and b) I consider gas to be relatively cheap. I can buy a lot of $2 gas for the premium on a Prius. But for fleets and rental cars and cabs, it makes sense.

Its possible that he just was given an abused vehicle. The car he got before had trouble staying on the road. Not sure how a car that new would have such bad alignment, (dont you say a word) but Im sure they dont come like that factory. In any case being in the 40s is nothing if you can get 36mpg in a 2003 dodge neon. No tax incentive there. Oh, and if my husband can get that in a neon, he should be able to get a little bit better out of a prius.
I mostly just made this thread because I thought how funny it was for that guy to be so impressed with a feature that came on 20+yo cars. I mean thats like if he said "Wow, power windows!!! kick @$$!" I mean, yeah, it is a cool feature, it would be nice if my ford had it, but to have him be told that, wow. Thats like having someone say how they just discovered how cool mp3s are, and you tell them "welcome to the 21st century"
I saw one (several years ago) that read something in regards to keeping our homeland secure by decreasing the need for foreign oil (it sounded much better but I cant remember) All I remember was how mad it made me. Lemme get this straight, they think theyre better than everyone else because they arent given foriegners more money? ...by purchasing a brand new vehicle that was made in Japan, not american factories like other toyotas. Thats almost as bad as those idiots with Mexican and Canadian "domestics" who claim everyone else is bad for buying american made "imports."
Not if I can pass them on foot! But then again theyd just accusse me of getting 0MPG!If Im approching a red light and there is a long semi truck trailer in one lane, and a prius in the other. I am getting in whatever lane that truck is in. I dont understand what kind of gears that vehicle has, but if I can past you at idle (1000 RPMs) youre too f'n slow. I can burn very little ful idling the whole way too, but if Im parked, thats still 0mpg.

Given the TCO (Total Cost of ownership) I'd bet a decent e30 would be less than a third of a Prius.
haha its funny, prius' dont get that great of gas millage, arn't at all fast, are expensive, even more expensive to fix, and are ugly as hell... still wondering what the upside is...
and acording to a couple diff sources, they are THE most enviromentlally UNFREINDLY car to make on account of when the batteries are produced it releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere,
i'd rather get a new diesel vw and get 45mpg and not look like a fricken green freek hippy
fuhk prius's
I love how my eta gets better mileage than these or smart cars.
Yet I couldnt apply for one of those clean air stickers because the EPA doesn't recognize non-hybrids as clean air. even though my smog results are always well below normal.
No love.![]()

My uncle and aunt have a second generation Prius and report mileage in the 40s with the driving they do. I've driven it, and it's a nice car. Not my style and not enough control feedback for me, but it's still a nice car and does its job very well. It has an absolutely huge cargo area as well.
It's a bit unfair to compare it to an E30. The two were designed for vastly different audiences, different purposes and during different eras.
9/2004 Chevrolet Suburban Z71, black, purchased March 2016, 300k miles.
6/99 740i Cosmos Schwartz M Sport, 214k miles, purchased May 2017. The nicest car I own.
5/2001 740i OrientBlau M Sport, 105k miles indicated, purchased March 2023. The best documented car I own.
1984 MasterCraft Stars and Stripes, Blue/White, PCM Ford 351W, PowerSlot, 912 hours, purchased September 2012 (not a car)
4/99 323is/5. Titansilber, 211k miles. Straight body project.
past BMWs: 5/1994 325isa (Arktisgrau), 3/1997 328is/5 (cosmosschwartz), 9/1990 535i/5 (calypsorot), 9/1990 318i/5 (brillantrot) 7/93 325i/5 convertible (samoablau) 2/92 325i/5 cabriolet (lagunengruen).

I would chose an e30 over a Prius![]()
Try is a word of FAILURE
Why are most green cars so ugly? Thats what I dont get.

What was your pic of?
Isn't the shape of the Prius designed so that it gently cuts through the air without massive downforce or drag?
Its shaped so it can easilly glide out of a chickens ass
