I have a 1997 840ci, auto. Thinking of a motor\tranny swap when my m62 gets tired. I have a few ideas (s62 turbo perhaps).
Nice. Do you have a water cooled alternator? Im not sure if 97 8's got the upgraded motor or not. I have a 96 motor. The early M62's before the upgrade are the best. There highly understated.
S62 turbo sounds great if you have the money. I think i would stick with the M62 because of its simplicity. I like all around performance so in my case with the e30 chassis, the weight advantage of the m62 was also the way to go. Getting that S62 turbo done right would be huge tho!
Still snowed in?

Updates?
Wow, its been a long time. Well after going through many cooling settups i decided to go through with mechanical fan which involved some relocating, re-chopping and welding and more fabrication. The last straw was drawn when on my way home from BimmerStock the car overheated to ~245*. So here are some before and after pics and a vid that i have been asked to provide.

This vid is from over a year ago on the cars maiden test drive. It was a 6th gear pull at about 30-35 mph and the tires broke traction so i let off not wanting to push the revs.

Damn, 6th gear spinning at such low RPM.
It sucks you had to relocate the filter housing that much, must not have been easy.

Damn! Nice Project you got there sir! Helpfully after i get my stuff sorted out, i'll start working on my 540i with turbo set up. I was just thinking, what do you think of rear mounted turbo set up?
I know it would create more lag, but im planing on running a smaller turbo? Plus, where did u put the MAF sensor? Did you take it to a tuning specialist?
Thank you!
P.S. Subscribed!
So cool. Hope you got the cooling under control now.

Yea, my brother and i couldnt really believe either. the first time it spun was at about 55 in 6th. Then i held it once and the car went sideways. After that i kept doing it at lower and lower speeds and higher gears while datalogging to see what was going on. Interestingly enough i never gave the throttle more than 50% according to the logs and it seems to break loose around 2800 rpm in some of the logs.
Everything worked out for the better. With all this i managed to clear out some of the heat source from the intake side, my air filter is now down below the heat, the intake tube is shorter and more direct, and i now have more space at the front of the engine dispite having a radiator twice the size of the old one. And the bay actually looks cleaner the way it is now. All wins.
I would prefer doing what ever i had to in order to fit the turbo up front. I do not use a MAF and i tuned the car myself. Mild tune on 7.5 psi
Thank you very much. Not sure what oolong means but if i need it i hope i got it undercontrol too

Nice build sir
I'm loving this build!!!
I've been thinking that I would build a rear-mount setup on the 540 this spring/summer, but this build kind of shames a guy for thinking that way when you are able to fit everything within the confines of an e30 engine bay.....
The big sticking point might be the amount of modification that is necessary to the chassis to get the downpipe out of the engine bay and whatnot. I'd like to keep the car unmolested if possible.
Do you think you could post up some pics of how you routed the turbo kit plumbing? Especially the crossover from the non-turbo side, and how you got everything around all of those massive accessories?
Thanks!
PS, PHATassM3, Nice sig pic sir!

I would also like to know the routed turbo plumbing
How did you get around it, not having the MAF sensor? By tuning it, you got rid off need for MAF sensor? Damn, 7.5 on stock m62... thats not bad at allI would prefer doing what ever i had to in order to fit the turbo up front. I do not use a MAF and i tuned the car myself. Mild tune on 7.5 psi
The engine in this car is my sig pic. I also believe there are vids and pics in the beginning of this thread. The primaries are 15" equal length and mirrored both sides. The cross over crosses over at the front.
thank you
I hope so too but even tho its showing pos. signs i wont know till next summer. At the moment the fan brings it down into the 160's before disengaging. It electric fans never brought it down past 208
MegaSquirt ecu doesnt use a MAF sensor. 7.5 psi and i only touched that once. The motor can take 9 psi and I believe Dinan and a Swedish builder have both claimed to make ~600 whp at this level on stock engines with much less efficient setups.
I would stay away rear mounts. Its more money, time, headache, and maybe even fabrication with the least to gain. I believe if you are willing to ditch a/c and maybe a few other things you can bottom the turbo where the a/c goes. Right now I cant picture what else might be down there.

Thanks man, but I can't ditch the A/C on the 5 series! I'll just have to take a good look at things when I get the front end of the car torn apart this spring. There's space for the turbo pretty much where you put yours, it's just a question of snaking all of the plumbing where it needs to go, AND having to build headers instead of using the stockers for a rear mount.... It will be interesting to see what occurs to me when I get 'er apart!
Keep up the great work with your project!!!
any news?
I have an in boost breakup issue arrize. While diagnosing, re-tuning i shot this video from 0- ~100 spinning and shortshifting through 6th gear. You can hear the breakup in 3rd gear and a few of the individual 6th gear pulls. I think the issue maybe my boost gauge somehow. Enjoy

Nice build. Its nice to see a turbo m62
Thanks. There is a number of them now since the beginning of this year. I am 3 years ahead when people were still saying it couldn't be done.
