Actually the pics still work. Just copy the image address and paste into a new tab, or right click->open in new tab.

Great DIY, I'll be doing tristitching on my new RAID wheel, hopefully it doesn't prove much more challenging than doing it fresh, since all three strands will have to be done by hand as I remove the old thread.

Well shit. I apologize for that. I used a quickie screen grab program to post pics and they seem to have stopped supporting pics.

Here are all the pics to the process from my flickr.

They do work, just need to copy the address of the non-displaying image and paste into a browser. They're just not showing up with the image code is all

truly awesome work! I am contemplating wrapping my steering wheel in Alcantara and adding some padding.

Would you recommend adding the padding to the fabric or the wheel?

    Awesome thread!

On the one hand, I wish I'd seen this earlier, so I could've thought about trying it on my own steering wheel...

On the other hand, I'm happier about paying the 400 bucks or so I did to get a wheel already done, now I see how much work it is

I've still got my old wheel handy, so once the new one arrives, I might give it a go anyway! No pressure, since the car will already have a nice wheel on it!

Intuitively I'd say put the padding on the material first, but that's with leather in mind. With Alcantara it might be different. I'm in the process of making a padded Alcantara wheel and will be testing what is best. I'll report back what I find out.

    And thanks.

Jeremy I was just reading this post because I have found myself back in the throws of making steering wheels and gauge pods again. I just can't seem to say no.

Man you have patience to do this sort of work. It'd be cool to see this in action next time you're hard at work. Just saw you're in Marietta.

Dont rely on the website pics, just trust that I have already done the trial and error for you and you can trust me. No, really you can.
So I'm trying out some steering wheel work for the first time, and I'm having issue with the colors you listed, Jeff. I ordered through thread exchange, Yale Blue, Scarlet Red, and Navy Blue, like mentioned above, but its not correlating to your color indicated at the position for Yale, and Navy definitely isn't in the mix. What seems to be missing is that light blue thread. Check out what I have below, just showed up today:

    Scarlet Red

Yale Blue (matches the zig zag instead of the straight stitch)

I know the last reply to this post is now over a year old, but I really like the info here. I've gone ahead and emailed the Thread Exchange to see if they can help with finding that last light blue thread. I'll post up when they write back.

I'm curious to know how many people have gone and tried recovering their wheels. I just picked up an E36M3 with a wheel that has the leather worn completely through, so I'm anxious to try recovering it.

If you contact the thread exchange. Have them send you the threads matching these Pantone colors

    Pantone:
    Blue — Pantone Process Blue
    Purple — Pantone 268
    Red — Pantone Warm Red

This should get you there even if they altered their dye lots. It's what I did. If I recall.

I think most of us send our wheels off to have other people refinish them.

This takes some skill and experience. I am thinking you make kits and sell us so you have some beer money when you retire.

    Unfortunately, this was their response:
    Hi Russell

"Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we don't carry a light blue in polyester, but I'm enclosing a link to our Nylon Size 69.

I know you had planned on using Poly, but you will find a larger selection of colors in Nylon.

Please feel free to call or email with further questions.

    We appreciate your business

So perhaps it's just a matter of finding another place that sells the polyester thread.

Its funny how the smallest stuff where you think it's going to be easy turn out to be a hassle. So I went to Tandy Leather (place was HUGE btw, so I figured they would have *everything*)to get either a Calf or lamb skin.. well, I was told the calf still has hair on it.. so that's out. And the lamb.. well.. turns out, if I don't want a seam in the upper center, then there isn't a lamb big enough to accommodate my pattern. DANGIT!

So I walked around trying to find something as thin and soft as the lamb, and I ended up with 3 things..the too small lamb for $69, a big garment leather hide for $169, and a pig suede for $49.. and the pig was juuust big enough to take my pattern if I cut it in diagonally. So I bought the pig suede.

We'll see how long it lasts.

Now all I have to do is find some light blue polyester thread in #69. Anyone else have any luck?

OH, and which Scarlet red did you guys buy? There are TWO. Scarlet (A&E 37594) and Scarlet (Eddington 2003)
