It was the E9 and to a much lesser extent, the E3 (an E3 raced in the Australian Touring Car Championships including a number of Bathurst 1000km races) that really launched BMW as a racing marque.
Although I am no expert I am aware of the incredible success the E9 had in the 70's in both touring car and sports car format. As a touring car the E9 has raced in 2500 and 2800 format, as a 3.0CSi and in various 3.0CSL formats.
Depending on the team the CSL raced from 2.997 litres to 3.003 litres, 3.210 litres and all the way up to 3.5 litres. Both the M1 and B34 derivative engines have seen European Touring Car and Sports Car racing throughout the 70's. Again the CSL saw some racing teams preferring a carburettor setup, removing the fuel injection. I've seen this on racing e24's as well.
Here are some photos of racing E9’s. Feel free to add you own and any racing history you may have.

Mate, you wouldn't have any pic's of the E3 in the ATCC would ya?
Some of YOU people are only alive for the mere fact that it's illegal to KILL you.
Thank you.

I've spent hours trying to chase down pictures of the E3's that raced Bathurst in 1974, 1976, two E3's in 1977 and one in 1978. The E3 raced as a Craven Mild Racing car at one time. I have not been able to find anything.
The E3 came 14th out of a 62 car field on 1977. See the link here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1977_Hardie-Ferodo_1000
We are chasing up the E3 history as we want to build an NC class racing car. These are recreations of touring cars up to 1972 with run ons permitted. So, as the E3 was first built in 1968 we can effectively copy any of the 1974 to 1978 Bathurst cars to classify for CAMS NC logbook. I have no idea what they look like! I'm still searching!!

Holy crap! Ok that's crude, but wow.
Thanks for posting all those incredible pics! I grew up in a German car dealership all through the 60's to the 80's, (Porsche,Audi,VW) and BMW was the competition.
I completely relate with seeing these racing pics as the competition , but also secretly thinking how badass awesome they were!
Since those days I have restored a few 02's, but seeing these photo's gives me new inspiration to restore the 72 Bavaria!
Thank you.

Still looking. I've found some racing E3's but these are all club build race cars and not the Bathurst cars. We are still chasing this down as there should be two racing e3's somewhere in Aus or NZ! I note that there are a few racing e24's in NZ now!
Note, no helmet! Lax race day for sure!!! See should go in the E3 section but hell, you are probably waiting for a reply here so here they go!!!
Here?

Some of the better cars for sale in Group 2 format cost upwards of USD $225k!! This one is currently for sale. Started as an original CSL in 1973 and was converted to a racer in the 1980's. Note that it has no period touring car or sports car racing history and was converted post the racing life of the CSL.
Now for the best boot (trunk??) setup I have ever seen in a BMW racing car!!
This next one is going for around USD$292k. She's a goo looking car as well! For the last 20 years a Group 2 racing CSL with racing history. She has an Alpina dry sump 3.5 litre engine and a lightweight special.
The next car was a late 1970's bare shell FIA Group 2 car. It won the classic Le Mans in 2006 and has a brand new engine and gearbox. Price? POA!!
Here's the cheapest Group 2 racing E9 I can find! Has FIA papers as a period H1 (1972-1975) racer!! Class CT25. 3.5ltr with 350hp! Sold for around $162k USD!!

Really nice pictures.
I am so inlove.
Why are my pants suddenly tight?
I own mostly junk. Except the Porsche, that's kind of cool.
All the motorcycles are trash which you can read about at

I have a bunch of pictures from the 1970s IMSA races at Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio and Daytona that I need to scan, but here are two I happen to have on-line at already. This is turn 5 at Road Atlanta, a bit of opposite lock and laying down some rubber x 2:

CSBM5, those look fantastic!
Here's some of the Porsche 935 and also a 935 being chased by the BMWNA 320i Turbo with David Hobbs driving (note the 935 with opposite lock dialed in, rear tires laying down rubber and blue smoke coming off them). The 935s put down so much rubber powering out of turn 5 back then -- it was a blast to see them belching flames into the corner, hear a brief turbo-lag pause, then whoosh up the hill out of turn 5, spinning both back tires all the whole way up.
Regards,
Chuck
