EDITS: All edits and changes to my original build will be in GREEN BOLD
Sooo, after many millions (ish) hours lurking the forums, I've finally decided to make a thread to document my upcoming project.
My Background: I'm 24 and a Financial Advisor out here in Seattle. I've had the privilege of owning and driving some pretty incredible cars so far in my life but I'd like to take that to the next level by building (more or less) my own
I have a fully built 05 STI I take to the track, so I'm not (completely) incompetent...
The Car: a 97 Hellrot 328is 5sp. I picked this car up with the intention of following, foolishly, into my friends' realm of drifting. Always been interested so why not?
Current Mods:
M3 styling (mirrors, side skirts)
Depo HIDs
Borla Exhaust
BC coilovers
Bigger Swaybars
QR Steering wheel setup
Buckets and 6pt harnesses
SSK
Sitting in my Garage to be installed:
Fancywide Diffuser INSTALLED
Full Condor Bushing set
VAC rear subframe reinforcements
Mishimoto Radiator + hoses
New Stewart Water Pump
SPAL Pusher Fan
Other things i'm probably missing...
My goals:
350-400whp since I'm still pretty new to drifting (Better for the car to be the limiting factor before the driver, if possible)
Built motor (forged piston, rods etc) Do it all once and over build for the future. Well aware this can be achieved with just gasket+studs, but I'd like to be safer
Have fun before electric and self driving cars take over
I just lined up someone to do the actual engine build, since I live in a major city, have nowhere or time (or skill) to do myself. I will be doing all the turbo related things myself, as well as coordinating the fabrication needed.
Motor Build:
8.5:1 pistons (wiseco, je, cp, whatever) Wiseco 8.8:1 84mm+ 0.010in overbore, stock deck height
Eagle rods
ARP studs + cutring gasket
Wire oil pump nut shut WENT WITH ACHILLES OIL PUMP SHAFT KIT
Not really sure what else to order, haven't found many definitive threads that list exactly what I need, so input and help is MUCH appreciated!
NEW TIMING CHAINS + GUIDS/TENSIONERS
NEW BEARINGS (MAIN, ROD)
TurnerMS BOTTOM END GASKET AND SEAL REFRESH KIT
Turbo Build:
RSI (good'n'tight) Otisfold Top Mount with t3/t4 and v-band wg port, Ti wrapped
Probably a PTE 5858 .82? My best guess for my initial goal and a 6262 for future power PTE 6062 GEN 2 T3 .82AR
TiAL Q 50mm BOV
TiAL MVR 44mm WG
Walbro 255lph with wiring and filter kit
m50 manifold + swap kit
CXracing or similar intercooler + pipes MISHIMOTO M-LINE
Rally road -4 an oil feed line + vanos banjo bolt & fittings
Vibrant -10an oil return line + fittings
MaximumPSI intake boot + ICV hoses CES STAINLESS ELBOW
TRM CCV kit VENTED CATCH CAN
AEM wideband
Some random Boost Gauge AEM TRUBOOST
Still deciding on Boost Controller ^
RALLY ROAD STEERING COLUMN GAUGE POD
f1 racing Stage 2 clutch with chromoly fw & new TOBW STAGE 3 W/ CHROMOLY FQ
OEM SACHS TOB
22rpd tuning package
Need Fabricated:
Downpipe with wideband and CCV bungs
Heat shield VOLLOSSO CUSTOM M VANITY COVER
Any IC piping needs + BOV & MAF flanges
Screamer Pipe?
I'm sure I am missing a lot but that's the bulk of it. This is mostly to document my progress and will update when I can. Feel free to chime in and for the love of god SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME
-Colin

I would suggest getting the 6 puck fx stage 3 or 4 clutch if I were you.
I ran a fx stage 4 for about 15k miles and it was an amazing clutch for the price. Esp if you are going to be drifting.

Also not sure I would run a precision turbo for a drift car.....

A water cooled one ideally. I agree a better clutch is also needed. You will smoke that stage 2 doing clutch kicks under power. I would plan for 500 whp right away and you can turn up the boost as you get comfortable. It sounds like a lot of power now but it's not.
For the motor I recommend adding an Achilles oil pump shaft and replace the timing chain rails. Nothing else really needs to be replaced, just tear it down hone it .5 mm over and put it back together. You do not need to align hone it or balance the crank or any of that, it's not a small block chevy. Bearings can be reused if they do not have any scoring or abnormal wear, the stock ones are excellent. Remember to put the oil squirters back in. If they surface the block the timing cover needs to be attached when the do it. The head doesn't usually need any work unless you want to throw money at it. It's fine the way it is so the more stuff you have done the more opportunity there is for them to fuck it up. If you can do it I would recommend you have the shop put the bottom end together and you can put the head and the cams and stuff back on. Good learning experience.

A.T.I. Damper......
Okay, thanks. I was kind of just guessing based on a few other threads I've read. What would you run then?
Awesome thanks! Brand isn't all that important to me (between BW, precision and garrett at least). I have a 35r on my 2.5l subie so a 30r should theoretically spool faster on a 2.8l.
170->500whp straight to the point, I like it! Darn, I was leaning towards a journal bearing turbo so I don't have to deal with water cooling haha. Okay, i'll pass along that info to the guy building it. I agree, minimal is better, and any opportunity to do something myself will help me in the long run. Appreciate the info!

good to see another Seattle guy in the game
I highly suggest fuse fabrication since your in Seattle for your exhaust and plenty of other things with this build, since your building the car have the exhaust and piping done right once. prices aren't ridiculous and workmanship is at the highest quality on the west coast - http://www.fusefabrication.com /insta/FB

A good journal bearing (AKA garrett, borg warner, holset) should hold up decent for short drift sessions provided you let it cool down before shutting it off after a run. 350 then 400, then 450 will seam like alot of power for the chassis but as you get used to it and get the suspension and tires sorted it will feel less and less crazy. I guarantee within a year you'll have it turned up to 600.
True true, but if the incremental cost of a BB turbo is congruent with the incremental performance/reliability increase, then I'm all for it. I have no doubt about turning it up eventually, I just want to make sure my SKILL is up for it. Going from grip racing to skidding is much more of a learning curve than I thought, and I'm not trying to hit the wall....again

Thanks to all the suggestions! Today I ordered:
FX stage 3 clutch w/ chromoly FW kit
TiAL BOV + Wastegate
CES Fuel pump kit 255lph
CES intake elbow
71 degree thermostat
Cutring + arp studs
Rallyroad oil feed line
Vanos Banjo Bolt
Achilles Oil Pump Shaft kit
Titanium exhaust wrap
Tonight I'm my friend is helping me strip all the accessories off and drain the engine as requested by the guy building it. Gonna start on the bottom end build tomorrow!
Gonna go with Butters recommendation of Garrett GT3040r with 0.82 a/r. BB should provide a bit more performance/reliability while banging limiter. So now I need to figure out how to route the turbo coolant line (haven't researched since I was planning on a journal bearing turbo). My long build finally starts today!

Engine sent to be built on Wednesday, so far so good. Looks like it might be done in a month or 2!
Most recent parts ordered:
Condor poly motor/tranny mounts
Turner bottom end gasket/seal refresh kit
New timing chains and oil pump chain
New main and rod bearings
Next on my list are Eagle rods, turbo and pistons after the cylinders are bored. Once I figure out how to insert pictures cleanly like most threads, then it'll be far more interesting haha

Engine is fully disassembled at the shop and almost all parts have been ordered!
Ordering new pistons thru CES as we speak.
Block and head are going to be sent to the machine shop ASAP (when they are available....)

Went to my 2nd open drift this last weekend to try and hone my skills before potentially 3x'ing my horsepower. Other than desperately needing an alignment, it wasn't terrible. Although, I did a burnout in reverse after spinning out and now my headlights don't work
So next on the list is to install my overfenders, put some spacers on and then get a proper alignment
Saw some words of wisdoms on another guy's car

I know someone that is looking for some oem 2.8L pistons, pins, clip and rings. If you’re thinking about selling yours, shoot me a pm.
WOT
That doesn't mean anything. I've seen blocks that had .006" of measurable cylinder wall wear and no compression that still had visible crosshatching. Its deeper than you may think.
