My exhaust system is rusted and mangled from previous repairs so it will be replaced. When hacking it off I find double walled pipes! It's the sections just after the downpipes.
Is this original and standard?

Doesn't look like oem. Didn't look like that in my 94
Time to bin your cat too. Ask me how I know

Thank you!
Yes the whole system will be replaced. I found remnants of the cat on the rear lambda sensor so I know they are completely blown

Definitely BMW OE..
The pre-Cat double wall exhaust pipe is an emissions upgrade to the E31 with M73 engine (1995 production onward) I'm sure it will also be part of the E31 with M62 V8 engines.
The double wall pipe insulates the inner pipe carrying the hot exhaust gas and helps get the heat to the cats.

CSi pipes are like that too, OE for sure. It is a noise dampener design.
Headers and down pipes. See functional description on pages 22 & 23 in the M73 Tech Brief in the link below.

No double wall on my Euro 97 M62.

Beware, double-wall construction.
No one could have thought up a more effective rust incubator.
Yes, i thought you had more than just rear boxes. Because of your strongly modified exhaust system your car isn’t a good example of what eisenmann race mufflers sound. Like i wrote, i had those rear mufflers also, and rest of the exhaust system was stock and it wasn’t loud at all! It was pretty silent.
