Standalone ECU already exists for the 4HP24 though:

Hello?
I thought we were trying to plant a 5HP30 onto a M70???
Why would you want to put a 4HP24 on a M73?
'93 850Ci - Mineralweiß Metallic
2001 740iL - Titansilber
ALPINA B7 -Alpinweiß III
...the price of cool ain't cheap!
Hehe,,
I am not that good in electronic that i have the knowledge to really explain what the main issue is,, but as far as i understand,, the ECU on 5HP30 have canbus or similar ,, and between every gearchange there is engine power cutoff ,, in milliseconds ,,to smooth out the feeling when driving hard etc etc etc
the transmissions torque-rate is on pair what the engine is ,, and thats why it is important to have this software when engine ECU and transmission ecu communicate
so i guess if there is a software that is simple as on 4HP24 then i am sure that E31 and E32 owners will hunt like nothing else for a tranny like 5HP30
this is just my opinion

I know you have priorities Wolf, Just a great upgrade and amongst the anxious,) Would be awesome to match up with ready available diffs as well, Thanks for the reply.
this guy has converted a e31 to EV and controled the 5 hp 30 with flappy paddle as an option

I meanwhile have a customer from Cologne (maybe 50 miles away) who's doing a full restoration of his '92 850i and gets a M70B54S from me.
He owns an automotive company designing/developing electroinc modules for all the big players in the car industry.
I recently talked to him about my idea and he's already looking into it. In his opinion it can't be that difficult - and the 5HP30 EGS isn't getting all inputs via CAN bus as revtor said. "Only" the communication with the engine DMEs seesm to be CAN bus based.
I'm so optimistic now that I just bought another used 5HP30 incl. EGS, wiring loom and shifter.
Following still...

Does that mean I'd have to get rid of my 3.91 LSD?
1993 850Ci.....18 years & 165,000 miles and counting!
Why not go for a 8hp 8 speed automatic?
our new Iveco pickup has it fitted.

Wow, I just went through this entire thread history -- interesting to read, for those that prefer automatic gearboxes. I wish that this much thought and effort could be put into an alternative for the manual gearboxes that many of us prefer! Replacements from BMW are insanely priced.* A bolt-in adapter setup to a different transmission (T56? TKOx00?) could be a profit center for someone with the skills and machine shop to produce it, and a substitute might be less prone to the synchro problems, could easily hold more power, etc... Pardon the diversion -- just wishful thinking / dreaming here.
Cheers, John
* At my last recent check, a replacement from BMW is $8099 retail, with $200 core charge. Last time I bought one was in 2008, and I believe I paid a lot less at that time, but still around $5k. A decent dealer will give a discount on them, but you'll never confuse one a 560G with "cheap."
Dinan TT's with 5hp30 will put out a far more aggressive launch and the kick downs will be more amazing. This would be a Unique and tasteful upgrade, Common in cars without all the modules, Anxiously awaiting!
My unsolicited advise: Don't be naive. This is exactly why this may not happen for you.
You'll be competing against big money, paid up front, with significant more to come.
It's a matter of where a rational owner decides to spend his limited, expensive engineering resources and whether he/she ships a quarter million units or a couple dozen, maybe.
Perhaps as a plan B, I can get a box done for y'all, but I would need to be fed with very specific application info, including any CAN protocols & messaging, if that's what it comes down to.
At the moment, my interest is low (because I'm satisfied V8+5HP24) and I have two similar projects on deck...
One, a naked Ford 5E55R tranny where I have to control the solenoids directly.
And two, an MBZ 772.6xx with a TCM in front of it.
I could contribute in this area, as long as I don't have to think too hard.
And I've recently switched to drinking (American) bourbon, if that matters to anyone.
{ed: Btw, my ETV box from the UpBeforeSix project...
- is already installed in the e31 e-box,
- is patched into many of the base-band signals,
- has a CAN interface (or two).
There is just no tranny application software present at the moment, as its primary mission was Vanos control.
"With minimal effort" it could be used to snoop or participate in CAN protocols, if anyone is interested.}

The problem mating the 5hp30 with the TT is you'd loose the Dinan modified valve body, software, and higher stall converter that matches the package. Mind you for enough money there are aftermarket alternatives for each.
If the can us problem can be solved, it's 8 speed for me
The drill pattern is fixable
hello everyone
