From what I've read about the possibility of an Alpina Baur, I doubt this e21 Baur is an Alpina car. However, it did come with an Alpina dash plaque #3-154 3. Since I've never seen an Alpina Baur and I like the e21 Alpina and e21 Baurs, I decided to model this project based on them. To obtain the Alpina look and quality, only original Alpina parts - no Alpina "Style" parts - will be used.
By-the-way, any information about Alpina #3-154 3 would be greatly appreciated. After viewing the thread, DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!
See my other e21 Baur S50B32 project at: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1750815.
I purchased the car for $700.00. The body was in good shape rust wise but as any car with 30-year old original paint, it needed to be repainted.
Here are some pictures of the paint job. The color was changed - complete - form white to match the 2011 Alpina white B7. The euro bumpers were painted to match the body. All trim and moldings that were chrome will be painted glossy black as well as the mirrors.
Note the missing holes that were for the U.S. license plate on the rear-end between the tail lights.
I purchased a 1998 - euro - M3 S50B32 motor, computer and wiring harness. Then I went to work refurbishing it. Every seal and gasket was replaced with new ones. All of the aluminum parts were bead blasted, primed, painted sterling-silver and clear coated.
Here are some pictures of the engine installation. Once the motor and transmission were positioned, a cut into the face of each M20 motor mount was necessary so they could be manipulated to match-up with the M20 sub-frame.
Manipulating the motor mounts created gaps where the cuts were in the motor mounts so metal was welded in to give the motor mounts the strength they need as well as the factory look. Afterwards, they were ground smooth and painted black. I will paint them sterling-silver before the project is complete.

The rear-end was completely refurbished also. Everything was bead blasted, painted glossy black and clear coat. Every mount, rubber, bearing and seal was replaced.

I was going to go with a set of staggered 6x15 and 7x15 Alpina e21 wheels that I purchased from Germany but they were too small to allow for the Massive big brake kit featuring Wilwood calipers that I wanted to use. So I purchased a set of staggered 7x16 and 8x16 Alpina wheels from England at a fairly reasonable price. They were in great shape other than needing to be repainted. Here are the end results.
The seats for this project are from a 2004 M5. I have the matching front and rear seats and door panels. This should be fun making it all fit.

Holy smoke Batman - I see this beautiful project and the Black BAUR that also has the wildwood brakes and the Euro S50. Are you the owner of both of these cars?
What work needs to be done to the driveline, tranny and diff to get them to work on this swap.
I went with a 3.0 liter M20 stroker engine for my 323i, but the Euro S50 engine is much better engine and faster. I got a price around 7k for it. What tranny do you use?
Looking good and I love that black car.....

jjgbmw323,
Yes, I'm the proud owner of both. For this project, I'm using the e36 5-speed manual transmission. A transmission mount was fabricated. The shifter does line up with the hole in the floor of e21. A mount needs to be fabricated for the shifter bracket on the floor pan. Still working on the drive-shaft combination. The diff. is factory e21 but will have a billet diff. cover with two mounting points for added strength. I'll run the factory internals until they blow then have it rebuilt to withstand.
I appreciate the complement.
Sincerely,
Ryne
Here are some pictures of the rear-end installed on this project. Sorry for the dusty pictures. By the way, the rotors have since been reversed to their correct sides.

Those E21 Baur Alpina's where made by Garage Du Bac. This was the French Alpina importer. They made a couple of these cars. Thing is; in an Article about the E30, they tell that Du Bac only did things to the exterior, not to the engine. So how much Alpina is in these TC1's, I don't know.

The Bauers were converted to C-1 cars and it would be ashame if that was in fact a conversion from Alpina. It could have easily been verified by checking the engine block on the flat spot that connects to the tranny. There would be a C1 stamp with the engine number and it could possibly be on the round hook as well just above the flat spot. That dash plaque would also be the correct dash plaque for a C1. Was there any additional Alpina items on the car when you got it? Rear or front spoiler, gear shift knob, steering wheel, slotted front breaks, diff cooler, bilstein shocks, interior seats, etc?
One could take their Bauer to Alpina and turn it into a B6 if they wanted to pay for it. With exception to 3 Buchloe produced C1 cars, most were customer and outlet Alpina dealer converted cars and were non production cars so you could purchase the parts from Alpina and have the conversion done. Most common was a C1 conversion on the original M20 motor. The picture of the rust colored french car is the only known Bauer picture Ive ever seen. Havent seen the blue one and the older pic seems to be period correct.

yes you should be able to run the vin and verify with Alpina the heritage.
Second comment - where do you find the brakes are they massive brakes by lee or something? Also what rear rotors are you running?
Looks good congrads, I wanted to do this swap but its very hard for me to get any work done on my car. My 3.0 liter swap has a shaved engine bay and chromed manifold, and should be an easy swap, but its taking way too long.
I have replaced my steering rack with the ZF sport, and all new urethane busings and urethane control arms....
I can only imagine what time this swap would take...are you doing most it yourself? Mad props to you ....

Nope. The Baur-conversion was not allowed for the B6 (and why they didn't build M3 Baur TC's in production). And; there are no Alpina's listed in the Baur-productionlist, Alpina says they didn't convert a Baur.
The 496 was a Polaris 320/6 original. So it's not reasonable to think they took this car for a conversion to C1-specs.
Gr Jeroen
I have voted for C1 3.2.
Tom,
That's one of the best complements I've ever received.
Sincerely,

jjgbmw323,
I contacted Alpina and was told they do not have any of the old records that could validate authenticity.
The brake kit is from MASSIVE Brakes in Canada. Lee builds a kit from aircraft grade aluminum. It's very easy to install and Lee will walk you through it if necessary. His web-site is: www.massivebrakes.com and his email address is: massivebrakes@gmail.com . Here's a link to his e21 kits: http://www.massivebrakes.com/brake-s...=e21_front_300.
Your steering setup sounds pretty cool. There's nothing like precise and rapid steering responses at higher speeds without excessive or jittery over-reaction. Check out the VAC Motorsports tubular front suspension I mention earlier in the thread. It's AWESOME!
Everything including the paint work - except the drive-shafts - has been done in my garage.
Thank you very much for the kind words.

I admired the work on the black car, and this one is just as nice, and Baurs are rare cars to begin with.
I foundly recall an e30 323i baur at the BMW dealership on the south shore.
Where did you find the engine? Did you take the whole wiring harness?
How much power and what clutch are you using? I am using South Bend stage 2 with an 11 pound flywheel....
Anyway...I could care less what you called it - as well, but I love that build~
I voted for B6 3.2 liter.
Great work!

What do those badges come from? Or are they fake? I'm sure you know the E21 C1 was a 2.3 and the B6 was a 2.8, so I'm confused as the the origin of the badges. Honestly I don't like either one and would go without it.
Ryne,
Kudos, this is an amazing project. I am not sure you should call it either one of the two suggestions.... those are Alpina designations, correct? If you go that route, the nay-sayers will say that it is just another Alpina wannabe.... You are doing an absolutley awesome project: I think you should just call it what it is. It can stand on its on two feet! Correct me if I am wrong, but i think it is a 332i.... a unique creation...

We are pretty sure that Alpina Buchsloe never did a Baur although Garage du Bac apparently did a few with Alpina accessories.
I don't think you need to go the C1/B6 route. What you are doing is awesome in itself, and you deserve credit to call it what you made it! Just say what it is! You are in a VERY VERY rare-ified atmosphere with this project! (Not to mention your OTHER black E21 Baur project!!! Sheesh!) You are right up there with the legendary Ron Perry, my friend! Are you familiar with his work? He just bought a TC1 Baur.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but...... you are getting some very positive feedback from some very highly esteemed forum members here. Keep doing what you are doing, call it what it is: E21 332i, whatever. It is a one of a kind, and fellas here can appreciate that, trust me. It is amazing, I absolutely LOVE it!

The engines were provided by Alex Lipowich. His web-site is: www.abloriginalparts.com The engines come with the wiring harness, ECU, EWS and original Keys. Here are some specs for the 1998 S50B32 engine:
power 321 @ 7400 rpm
hp per litre 98.88 bhp per litre
bhp/weight 219.79 bhp per weight
torque 236 ft lbs @ 3600 rpm
I'm using the UUC Stage 2 & M5 Clutch setup 8.5 pound flywheel and OEM BMW M5 clutch kit.
Thanks again for being so kind.
Ryne
Layne,
The badges are foux. I had them created so that those who are "in the know" wouldn't think I was trying to pass the car off as an original C1 2.3 or B6 2.8 since it has all of the original Alpina accessories and will appear to be. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to clarify that and for sharing your opinion.
Kindest regards,
Ryne
Tom,
Well put. That is exactly what I did with the black M tribute car; inverted the 23 from the original 323i badge and call it a 332i.
On the other hand, since this car has all of the Alpina accessories including the rear wheel arches - minus the engine and diff. - it was planned to be an Alpina tribute car... just better.
The reason I had the foux C1 3.2 and B6 3.2 badges created was so that those who are "in the know" wouldn't think I was attempting to pass the car off as an original Alpina.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for all the nice things you said about me and the projects. I am truly grateful. You've always been a class act.

AUTO MERGED. I WAS NOT ABLE TO CREATE A NEW POST FOR THIS TOPIC.
Here are some pictures of the transmission mount in various stages of its production. I used the e36 transmission mount as the pattern to form the curve and position of the mount holes.
I painted the transmission brace black for now and installed it. The bolts will be trimmed.
