Really a remarkable post that has been assembled, My iX is gone but was a great car and would buy one without a thought again.

    Xfer case

The viscous coupling has nothing whatsoever to do with splitting torque front to rear. It simply allows input and output ends of a shaft to turn at different rates. That is all it does. A guibo coupling cannot do this. The VC is a really stiff torque converter. The transfer case VC supplies torque to the front driveshaft ONLY. The rear differential has a VC which supplies torque to the rear Axels. Torque is split in the transfer case via sun/planet/ring gears BEFORE the VC.

Also, I have never found a case where the splines of a front drivshaft are worn to the point where they slip. I have changed many stretched transfer case chains. When you drain the TC fluid, poke a screwdriver in there and check for play in the chain. It shouldnt move more than 15mm. Check the magnet for chain dust. When the chain slips it makes a horrible banging sound. This happens more often but with less violence as the chain teeth get filed down by the sprockets. Never had to change a sprocket unlike in Hummers. Borg Warner makes replacement chains. Bearings can be had from industrial supply houses unless you want to wait two weeks for chinese bearings to be shipped from germany.

Where can I get an E30 IX service manual? It seems the official Bentley one doesn't cover the IX. Thanks.

Were you looking for something specific? 90% of the content in the bentley applies to the ix. A BMW factory manual does exist, and a member on e30tech had one and was going to make copies... but I think it fell through

I do have a PDF of about 30 pages from the factory manual that covers the transfer case. The only other thing that is really specific is the front suspension, but thats pretty straight forward. http://www.sendspace.com/file/mwq3jt

What about performance mods? I am looking into iX's and i wanted to add some more power. Ideally around 250 crank is what i want. I was wondering about a small turbo or just other mods that i can do. you guys have any ideas? i just want it to be an ultimate quick daily driver

I'm driving BMW BBS style 5 rims with ET 24 on my car, so i don't see how other E30 rims don't fit on the iX, as someone said?

The only way you'll see 250hp in an m20 is with boost. Turbo builds are plenty and some have even done superchargers. Theres forced induction sections on r3vlimited an e30tech. Another option is a stroker build, but the $/hp ratio is generally higher than a turbo build. Check these out

The ix drive train has been known to hold a substantial amount of power, but if you do decide to boost, MAKE sure its in good order.

Bolt ons are fairly limited. A mark d/turner/etc chip is good for about 10-20hp. A MAF conversion and a better exhaust may free up a bit more as well. With bolt ons and simple mods you may be looking at 180hp to the crank if your lucky.

With a good tuneup and fresh suspension you'd be surprised how much fun these cars are. I've been driving mine for 4 years now with no real intentions to add power to it. Hell, the Skip Barber driving school at Lime Rock used one with stock power, and only recently sold it.

I don't know who said it wouldn't fit. 4x100 is 4x100. However it comes down to the offsets. I'm not too sure how much of an effect a 17mm difference can have, but the ix uses 41mm wheels. They may fit and run fine, but its not 100% "right". How that comes into play I have no idea. I've been running et24 steelies every winter for 4 years with zero issues.

Not sure if this is the right place, so feel free to flame...

But I have come across a set of brand-new/NOS rear mud flaps for the iX. I haven't an iX, so I'll be selling them, but was trying to get a roundabout on what to set for the price. I want to put them on e-Bay, but according to the rules here, I can't link them from the forums. The brackets are rust-free and they contain most of the hardware. I have more pics if you like.

    Thoughts?

    part # please

do you have a part # as i think there is a difference between 88 and 89-on due to divingboard vs plastic bumper designs . i would be interested in them if they fit the later plastic bumper version and the price is right

The part number is obscured on the bag, sort of worn away. All I can make out looks like this: 72 60 1 968 441. That's all I can see as far as numbers go, but the fade is difficult. I did just list them on the big auction site.

Unfortunately I don't have the time!! I still haven't finished my bumpers thread, but I will someday.

BTW: one is a race car, one is a street car, and one is a parts car!!

here's the difference between the standard E30 and the iX front shocks
iX shock is the uper one

so, normal E30 shocks won't fit on the iX

but the rear ones are the same as the standard E30, I think

    Suspension

What do you guys do for upgrading the suspension? I wanted to put H&R Sport springs with Bilstein Sports all around, but I can't find ix specific Bilstein sport fronts anywhere, only the HD's (which I've read don't work so well with sport springs). Any suggestions for suspension setups that are good on an ix?

How about Swaybars, anything different with upgrading swaybars on an ix vs. a regular E30? Does anyone have experience with the Eibach ix specific Swaybar Kit, 28mm front, 21 rear?

    Thanks
