I'm in the planning phase of my turbo build for my 1990 535i. I want some turbo noise and a bit more power but I'm not power hungry (yet). This is going to be pretty cliche but it's a budget build. I plan to do 4-5 psi with no tuning for a while and then run 10 to 15psi on mega-squirt. This is street car and I want quick spool more than anything. I was thinking HY35 because they're cheap and would spool fast. However I've read that they would be too little for even an m20 and the top end would be heavily restricted. H1C? Hx35? HX52?

There is no amount of boost that will safely work with no tuning or fueling modifications. The stock injectors are basically maxed out in stock form. A rising rate fuel pressure regulator can be made to work with a few pounds of boost and the flap door air flow meters used on the m30's. I did it for a short time back in the day. HX35 with an aftermarket turbine housing would be a decent place to start. Get a wideband AFR meter so you have some idea whats going on.
I would suggest a T4 HX40 for the M30 if you plan to turn it up to 15psi.

You would be amazed at what you can do with a non tuned L-jet system. I was able to change injectors, run e85, adjust the AFM to load more fuel with the larger injectors and boost the snot out of an 1984 m10. The car made 250 to the wheels at just 15#s of boost on the stock Ecu running e85.
I think we are all a little stupid for boosting our cars, but stupid is what stupid does. Personally I think the hx35 is to small for the m30, but then again, I ran an hx35 on my M10 to 30psi and felt it was great for power delivery.
good luck.
WOT
This is just the answer I was looking for. I don’t think it’ll be too small. I want low down torque, I’m not looking for high revving horsepower. This is just a street car and nothing more.
Oh but the power hunger will set in. Ill be like ya this is good. Next day I’ll do forged internals and run it 700rwhp.

5psi is an unreasonable goal to set
like saying just the tip baby only for a second, c'mon.
yea right! We can set u up but you can't be broke.
Homemade adapter manifold works good i ran one for a long time.
