    3" Exhaust that doesnt suck

After running around with the RMS headers last night and suggestions from my fabricator and posts on here, its become apparent that the Active track pipe (Says 3", drops down to 2" in the muffler) and Eisemann rear section are now holding up the exhaust flow. I want to move to a 3" but I still want to be able to take this car on long trips without dealing with drone. I looked at the Bimmerworld 3" setup but I've seen a lot of folks state that its just loud and drones like hell. Anyone have a custom setup that they daily that does well?

Or do I hack up my Active and put in a higher flowing muffler?

Drone generally comes from a lack of mid section muffling (resonator). Overall loudness generally comes from rear muffler selection.

    More restriction generally means quieter.

I have a 3" exhaust for sale right now. I will see if I can get the PO to provide some sound clips as I never installed it. Would be willing to work out some sort of trade for the AA "b" section as I need that anyway.

Let me think about it...to be honest, you might install that, you'll get a decent bump in power

Just listened to some XR1 clips, like the sound. What are you running now?

I have built about 5 exhausts. Na and turbo. Always use a resonator and a big muffler and it will be nice once it breaks in.

I prefer the big oval muffler sound.

Vibrant gear is nice. We shoulda built you one while i was local.

The OP is supercharged, a straight though 3.5" would make him deaf.

Maybe, but I highly doubt it. I love the look and sound of my Dinan cat back, plus I want to be as plug and play as possible with no fab work. AA headers and AA B section do that for me

3" is going to be loud unless you run 2 large mufflers. I've done it multiple times with various combos on NA applications. Vibrants are loud mufflers and so is the Borla XR-1. This was 2.5" single exhaust with ebay headers, a Borla Pro-XS mid muffler and a Vibrant street power out back. No drone, and mild below 3500 rpms, definitely loud at WOT. If you ran this combo with 3" it would definitely be louder.

On my s52 Ti, I run Racleand headers, to single 3" with a Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator AND a Vibrant 12" resolator after that, to a Borla Pro-XS rear muffler. It's about as loud as my 2.5" exhaust was on my e30 with a deeper sound because of the headers and Borla out back.

I'm still NA (for now), but my exhaust is similar: SS rep long tube headers into Y-pipe into 3" piping.
I'm using a 3" Mangaflow race cat and two 3" Magnaflow oval-body straight-through race mufflers.
No drone and nice tone (Magnaflow sometimes sounds like poo).

I used to not have the center muffler for better ground clearance, but I added the center muffler (only 3.5" case height for better ground clearance), and the car got much quieter (esp when not full throttle) and much less raspy.
If my car was currently running, you could come hear for yourself in person...

Turbo chews up the noise. Supercharger is much louder. I went with RMS to modified euro SS mid to euro SS rear. If single 3.0, you will want at least 2, maybe 3 resonators/mufflers.

The AA track pipe offers to high of back pressure based on the back pressure measurements that I took on my superchargers s52 at 13 psi. It looks pretty and fits nice though.

Following this closely. Want to go to a 3" header back exhaust for my setup as well. I want to retain my Remus muffler but I'll have to split back into dual before the muffler if I really want to keep it. So Ill be Longtube headers to 3" midsection straight back to the Remus muffler, pretty much identical to my setup now except I have a dual 2.25" setup that feels restrictive. Hardest part is finding an exhaust shop in the Metro-Atlanta area that will touch an exhaust without a catalytic converter.

Mine's 3" all the way, no cat, Vibrant ultra quiet resonator in the middle, oval muffler out back and it doesn't drone. I believe it was made by Maximum PSI, and used to be attached to NY98M3's car.

Supercharged car here with headers, race cats, and 3". My car was loud. I tried various mufflers. All loud. I finally got it quieter by squeezing in a large Magnaflow 12589 in the back. Straight through muffler, but the large case really knocks down the sound level. Size of the case is the key to reduce sound.

I ditched my 3" exhaust on my sc car with RMS headers after a few months. Had a vibrant resonator and muffler and still was unbearable. The euro supersprint stuff is much more tame and still flows great if you're looking for other options.

Use as shallow of bends as possible. I use 14 gauge 45* elbows on my stuff. Seems to keep more noise out of the floorboard. Most people mess up and put a 16gauge 90* right under the seats and have a wicked drone.
