Car: 2014 X5 5.0 n63tu engine
Bit of background: owned since 42000kms, oil changes at around 6000-7000kms, always supreme gas, always in garage at home. Back when dealer warranty was still available, had the common transfer case jitter issue under high torque conditions when accelerating in lower rpm at highway speeds. Went in, dealer diagnosed transfer case and did their step 1: flush the fluid. The problem went away and off I went for another 2 years about and when warranty went out the transfer case issue (seemingly) came back. Warranty was over so I went in to a local reputable transmission shop that does work on dealer cars as well as customer cars. They did the transfer case rebuild for me and the transmission service oil plus filter. I get out of there thinking I’m all good new but the problem (jitter) persists: extremely similar symptoms to transfer case power transmission hesitation. This is now at 136000kms.
Those who are familiar with the transfer case issue know that for an untrained individual that’s never had to do anything with bmws it’s going to feel like misfire at first glance. And in my case it did until I really forced the issue at low rpm/high torque scenario and the car went misfiring like crazy with a drivetrain malfunction message. To make it go away I’d stop the car, turn it off and turn it back on again: crazy misfire and drivetrain malfunction gone. Sometimes without even a check engine and sometimes with a check engine remaining.
Note: after I left the transmission shop, and before, no cel was present.
I never had a chance to scan the codes after I’d send it to full misfire limp mode, only after I’ve reset the car and driven home. I’d scan in after (without forcing it back into limp mode) and get this:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected
P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
Last week: I pulled the mafs and cleaned them with MAF electrical cleaner spray - no contact. I can’t say they were too dirty but one was showing maybe a bit of residue on the surface. Since then, drove the car without forcing it in high torque scenario and no cel.
Today, new symptom appeared on the way to work: rough-ish idle in gear with slight improvement when engine gets warm. Cel comes on without driving the car hard.
I get home and scan this:
P0172 System too Rich
I clear it and decide to finally do the misfire limo mode test so I apply the high torque scenario which throws the car in misfire and drivetrain malfunction, without turning it off scan the codes and get just the above again, as well as after restarting the car:
P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0304 - Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
P0302 - Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0307 - Cylinder 7 Misfire Detected
P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0172 System too Rich
more info:
-shame on me I’ve never changed plugs
-I’ve never changed coils
-I’ve changed the crank case purge air line last year (it was cracked and falling apart, with whatever code I can’t remember)
-I’ve not changed the PCV pipe (the one that has check valves on the right and on the left side), but it’s not cracked and not falling apart.
To me this seems like an obscure issue that could be pointing to the PCV pipe, the plugs, the coils, the 02 per my internet search and etc. I’d like to get some suggestions before hoarding half the engine over, but I already did purchase spark plugs lol
Please help me out, it would be highly appreciated
Thank you
