If you're keeping an oem head unit without a display (i.e single DIN), and you want a backup cam, you'll need one that uses the mirror as a display.
Bunch of mirror options available, but the difficulty is finding a mount that looks close to OEM.

This is what I did, https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ade&p=30755083

    Mirror replacement: For another vehicle I proc'd a Auto-Vox V5PRO.
When I finally get into the box, I'll also check out the mount hardware with respect to the E31 and update this post.

Whereas our the stock design positions the mirror straight below the mounting point,
their universal arm positions the mirror rearward, towards the cabin, colliding with the overhead console.
This is probably the same issue petejk dealt with on his aftermarket.

Auto-vox shows renditions of other arms, one looking like our stock geometry, so I will get with them on an E31 specific solution.

    {ed: In theory you could move the mounting point, but in the actual world I've pulled out chunks of glass laminate before the adhesive yielded. Not gonna do that again.}

If Auto-Vox have a mount for the E90 it will work.

I decided to use a universal mount, so that I won’t have to go though this in a few years when I change my mirror out. At that point I can bolt a new mirror onto my existing mount.

I linked AV Bejing to this thread, so they now have your suggestion.
It's not just geometry, but also the adaption system.
If AV can get something to me, I'll go for an complete install, even though this wasn't my original target.
I'll have to back fill on my mini-van.

There are already some systems integration flags >>
A harness goes to the stock mirror that has a light sensor, perhaps other features like motor or glass dimming, and security on my '97 has busted me for disconnecting the mirror.

I remember reading this thread, concerning moving the alarm module from an existing mirror as part of a home link mirror retrofit, for later cars like yours.

    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...trical-experts!

Not something I’ve had to look at for my 91.

Thread mentions possible relocation of the alarm module from the mirror to another location in the car?

The AV factory has been responsive on the issue of bracket / arm, and they've indicated a candidate.
    So...
Just for you my friend(s), I'll proceed with the V5pro into the late e31.
Fortunately, my interior had already been slated for restoration, so this gets folded in and I'll have more visibility about the battlefield.
The circuit snooping by Taylor and Frankie from a dozen years back is highly useful and my professional intuition is that the alarm / remote guts will find a new home.
I'm strongly biased towards a solution that "any idiot" can reproduce.

I installed the BimmerRetrofit backup camera setup but eventually added a camera with 360 view for better parking help. It took a bit of custom wiring and mounting work, but it was worth it—helps a lot with blind spots around the E31. Just make sure you double-check measurements for where you mount the side cameras so you don’t end up with a skewed image.
