Need Advice on G05 X5 Engine Choice (Coming from Discovery 5)

Hi all,
Looking for some guidance from fellow BMW owners as I consider returning to the fold.
A few years back I had an absolutely fantastic G31 540i Touring – superb car in every way, and to be honest, I’ve missed it ever since I sold it. I replaced it with a 2017 Land Rover Discovery 5 HSE Lux for the 3.5-ton towing capacity and interior space (we have a twin-axle caravan and two Labradors). While the Disco has served its purpose, I’m now getting hit with relentless repair bills, and it’s wearing me down.

What I’m Looking At

I’m now looking to get back into a BMW and have my eye firmly on the G05 X5. The problem is — I’m stuck on which engine to go for:

• 30d – The logical choice, and probably most efficient.
  
• 40d – More power, extra turbo — could be the sweet spot.
  
• M50d – Tempting for the performance and tech, but I’m cautious about maintenance and running costs.

This will be my daily driver, with regular long trips, towing, and the usual family use.

My Must-Haves:

• OEM Tow Bar (must be rated for 3.5T towing)
  
• Panoramic Roof
  
• Tech Pack (360° cameras etc.)
  
• Comfort Pack
  
• Driving Assistance Pack (mainly for adaptive cruise control)

What Else I’ve Considered:

• A newer Disco 5
  
• Mercedes GLE or E-Class
  
• A full-size Range Rover

Ultimately I’ve ruled out the Disco and RR due to reliability and running costs — same reasons I’m looking to leave the Disco in the first place.
Also considered going back to a 530d Touring, but when I had the 540i, towing our 2T caravan was less than ideal, and the dogs took up most of the boot space.

What I’d Appreciate Advice On:

• Real-world performance, MPG and maintenance differences between 30d, 40d, and M50d
  
• Anyone here made the jump from Land Rover to G05? Any regrets (or was it the best move ever)?
  
• Any known issues or ownership tips for the different engine variants?

I’d really value insight from anyone who tows regularly or uses their G05 as a workhorse. Want to get this next purchase right — and stay there this time!

Do you guys have the 50e over there? It’s a superb X and my wife is getting 199 mpg on hers. Insane. Of course her driving habits fit with the plug in hybrid paradigm perfectly…work, store, etc. are all within 10 miles. You’d mention “long trips “ and while we take them in ours and it’s a monster on the hwy, it gets “normal” straight 6 gas mileage then.

We have the hitch package and I think its rating is pretty high. The combined torque is about 500 ftlbs.
