Power steering fluid overflow from reservoir after sitting for a while

Bizarre thing happened wonder if it is normal. My 1997 850Ci had been sitting for about a month, battery died so I charged them but noticed the power steering fluid had overflowed from the reservoir during this time. Not sure if it was before or during the charging process. The level was normal before but when I removed the lid it was overflowing so I removed some. After car charged I started the engine and the PS level went down.

Is this overflow normal when a car has been sitting?

Servo Öl unter dem 8er nach längerer Standzeit ...... muss nicht immer auf einen Defekt hindeuten. Es kommt immer wieder vor dass unter dem 8er nach längerer Standzeit eine Öllache vom Brems und Lenkreislauf (Pentosin) unter dem Auto gebildet hat. Es muss sich hierbei nicht um eine Leckage handeln. In den meisten Fällen wurde zu viel Pentosin in den Behälter eingefüllt, bzw. es wurde nicht korrekt die Füllmenge bestimmt.
Ölstand für Brems- und Lenkhydraulik prüfen (Auszug aus dem 8er Bedienungshandbuch)
- Bei stehendem Motor Rändelmutter lösen und Behälterdeckel abnehmen.
- Bremspedal mehrmals treten, bis der Ölstand nicht mehr ansteigt bzw. bis beim Bremsen Widerstand zu spüren ist (ca. 10 Betätigungen).
- Den Ölstand kontrollieren: Er muß ca. 20mm unter der Oberkante des Behälters sein.
- Eventuell Ölstand berichtigen. Dazu unbedingt Pentosin CHF 11 S oder, falls nicht erhältlich, LHM – keinesfalls Bremsflüssigkeiten ! verwenden. Behälterdeckel aufsetzen und Rändelmutter festziehen. Auf richtigen Sitz des Deckels achten. Das Pentosin unter dem 8ter hat natürlich zwei Seiten. Die eine ist wie schon erwähnt ein einfaches Überfüllungsproblem und einfach zu lösen. Das zweite ist schon etwas tiefgreifender. Der Druckregler hält den Druck des Druckspeichers (bis 100Bar) nicht mehr und entlädt sich. Das heißt das Pentosin fließt wieder in den Behälter. Solange das nur ganz langsam (Monat / Woche) erfolgt ist das noch kein schwerwiegendes Problem. Sollte jedoch jedes mal vor dem Losfahren (am gleichen Tag) das Pedal wieder hart sein wird es zum Sicherheitsproblem da die Bremse nicht mehr vollständig unterstützt wird. Dann ist der Druckregler zu tauschen. (Problem ist, es gibt keine mehr ...) Deshalb mein TIP zum Entlasten des Druckspeichers und dem Druckregler vor längeren Standzeiten: 10 x Bremspedal treten um den Druckspeicher, Druckregler und alle damit verbundenen Leitungen und Dichtungen zu entlasten.

Power steering oil under the 8 Series after a long period of inactivity......doesn't always indicate a defect. It often happens that a puddle of oil from the brake and steering circuit (Pentosin) has formed under the car after a long period of inactivity. This does not necessarily indicate a leak.
In most cases, too much pentosin was poured into the reservoir, or the fill level was not correctly determined.
Check the oil level for the brake and steering hydraulics (excerpt from the 8 Series Owner's Manual)
- With the engine off, loosen the knurled nut and remove the reservoir cap.
- Press the brake pedal several times until the oil level no longer rises or until resistance is felt when braking (approx. 10 actuations).
- Check the oil level: It must be approximately 20 mm below the top edge of the reservoir.
- If necessary, correct the oil level. Be sure to use Pentosin CHF 11 S or, if not available, LHM – never use brake fluid!
- Replace the reservoir cap and tighten the knurled nut. Ensure the cap is properly seated.

The Pentosin under the 8th gear obviously has two sides.
One reason - as already mentioned- is a simple overfilling problem and is easy to solve. The second is a bit more serious. The pressure regulator is no longer maintaining the pressure of the accumulator (up to 100 bar) and is discharging. This means that the pentosin is flowing back into the reservoir. As long as this happens very slowly (month/week), it's not a serious problem. However, if the pedal feels hard every time before setting off (on the same day), it becomes a safety issue because the brakes are no longer fully supported. Then the pressure regulator must be replaced. (The problem is, there are no more available...)

Therefore, my tip for relieving pressure on the pressure accumulator and pressure regulator before longer periods of downtime:
Press the brake pedal 10 times to relieve pressure on the pressure accumulator, pressure regulator, and all associated lines and seals.
