    BMW E36 316i SE Compact

Hello, my ABS and traction control light is on, I've scanned the car and I have the error code "71 Pump Motor" is this just the ABS pump or could it be something else?

E36 typically does not have pump issues but you can look at the E30 cars where the ribbon cable fails internally. You can also remove and clean all 4 abs sensors, after removing the small Allen bolt give a gentle twist when pulling it out.

Yeah so most likely it is the pump
A other question if you don't mind, it had steering issues which have now been resolved however when I drive for the car for about 20 minutes or even when I first get in it the steering wheel begins to squeak which then leads to like a crunching/knocking sound any ideas what that could be

There is a plastic cage bearing under the steering wheel that fails. When you have it apart you can also spray grease down the tube there is another section at the bottom that needs lubing. Be sure to disconnect the battery for 20min due to the airbag.

So once the plastic cage bearing is replaced grease just has to be sprayed down the tube and at the bottom and it should be alright? Which number would the bearing be

Use realoem with your build month/year from the b-pillar. Are you sure its an e36.from 2000??

You have to select 'classic' catalog.

Yeah January 2000, is it safe to drive even though it's making that noise until I find the replacement part?

Then with the ABS do you reckon it's just the relay that needs cleaning

The plastic bearing he is talking about is #14 in the diagram I believe. Does the noise sound like it's coming from in the car up close? Rebuilding the steering column is fairly annoying because the #3 bolts on the diagram are a pain to remove.

I looked up another e36 and the steering column diagram is different and the plastic bearing is more easily identified. You might just need to take your a part and lube it up, lithium spray grease would be an option, wear gloves.

Yeah it sounds like its coming from inside the car exactly that it starts squeaking then the more I drive it the more it crunches
