Might as well do a fluid change, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Odds are it needs a tranny or tranny work. Don't worry about over revving it and blowing the engine, it's got a built in rev limiter that would prevent that. "Money Shift" is the only way you would do that.

There's a Getrag that was used with 2.5 engines but it's considered weaker, and in fact the ZF is used with 2.8 and 3.0. Driveshaft and shift linkage may or may not interchange, just get a ZF. I'm seeing plenty for under a thou at Car Part. Not cheap, but not astronomical. Or find one in a DIY yard, but probably slim pickings there.

it's the 4th gear's syncromesh. it needs to be replaced. nothing to do with the fluid or anything else.
