    e36 u-joint clunk

    Hi there,

I have had a clunking noise coming from underneath my car for the past while, noticeable when lifting off of the clutch then stamping back down quickly. There are other rattles that have come along with this but this was how it started and is still happening.

I was just reading up on driveshaft issues and came across the u-joint. Symptoms seem to line up pretty well. Only thing is I had gotten under the car previously and was pretty certain the noise was coming from the front of the shaft by the gearbox.

If theres anyone with knowledge on u-joint issues or could shed any other light on the issue it would be much appreciated.

Car is a 1998 sedan 320i, and to be fair the noise began shortly after completing a manual conversion so no component is out of the question. For one the shaft was not balanced before installing, just took the front half of a small case and attached it to be back half of my auto prop.

    Thank you.

Check your center support bearing, if it wasnt replaced during the swap that old rubber could have torn when moving everything around.
