Wow, that is looking pretty clean! How did you avoid getting sand or media in the engine when you blasted it? Is that silver or aluminum paint that you used to coat all the parts, like timing covers, manifolds, etc?

All the holes were blocked off very well, and soda was used on sensitive parts. This was high temp aluminum paint.

Transmission was nice and smooth but I think we might upgrade the differential gearing, because even know this engine will put out at least 360 Hp the Euro 850 diff is only 3.15 on the 4 speed auto.. that's pretty terrible.
Bringing it to atleast US 3.64 gearing will help the feel of the car a lot!!

Need an answer on the jesus bolt, which one to use? Installed the harmonic balancer with the timing gear holder hub onto m73 crankshaft, is M73 bolt ok to use ? Remember someone mentioning another bolt has to be used maybe N73 one? Was it Wokke??

    Getting there finally!
Well the M73 bolt seems to work just fine? Its longer than m70 bolt and m73 crankshaft is shorter. Not sure why wokke suggested to use a different bolt? Wokke?

Excellent progress sir! With my new job keeping me extremely busy, I have made the rough decision to outsource the engine swap. Using a great shop here in Carmel and we are slated to get started at the beginning of April.

Will still take lots of pics and document, but you are doing an awesome job!!

Fully completed today. Will have more pics and videos. Smooth idle with custom tune, power is impressive, even with 3.15 diff ratio wheel spin first and second gear. 0 leaks and no errors.

Thanks! Yes very pleased indeed, we had a minor set back the first go around, transmission puked oil out of the rear seal, had to remove the exhaust and replace the seal at the output shaft.
Compared to an M70 powered 850 this is truly a night and day difference, don't even think we will be changing the final gear ratio to 3.64 as originally planned.

As a side note, we are now able to perform M73 hybrid conversions in Lithuania for European 850 owners, within a reasonable time frame and much more reasonable cost than the similar service offered in Germany
Full or partial E31 restoration service is also available.

Awesome work buddy! I have been so swamped with work, but the car, engine and all the bits are now at McGinity Motorworks for the swap. So, in good hands. Entire driveline will ultimately be updated / swapped out. Having the trans shipped off to Eurotrans for a complete rebuild and then popping in a rebuilt 3.91 LSD.

A couple of detail questions for you:

    1) You ended up using a standard M73 Crank Bolt correct? I need to get the right one ordered for the shop.
    2) You ended up using the M70 exhaust manifolds correct? But the front down pipes needed to be modified or was it the actual manifold itself that needed some tweaking? The exhaust is the biggest outstanding question for me.

Any other special items I should pass along to the shop while the do the swap?

Yes, original M73 bolt worked just fine!
Front M73 flanges cut and welded onto the m70 manifolds, the rear M70 manifolds are plug and play. We can do the exhaust mods, but it would be probably pretty pricey to ship M73 manifolds to Lithuania.

Not sure why the photos insist on being flipped. They are straight in the folder where I have them. There does not appear to be a way to flip them in the editor.

Ok, stopped by McGinity tonight and the crew is making great progress. Have a couple of minor issues and some clarification questions for dragon:

    1) Oil Pump - So, we are swapping in the M70 oil pump. Is it true that we need to pull the entire lower timing assembly in order to swap out the oil pump chain? The sprocket on the M70 pump is quite a bit different than the M73 sprocket, so it looks like we need to tear down a little deeper to get to the pump chain.

    2) The PO of my 70k mile M73 appears to have sheared off one of the water pump bolts and decided to grind it off. So I am looking for a reasonably priced used part # 11141702169

    3) For the exhaust manifolds, when you say, "Front M73 flanges cut and welded onto the M70 manifolds", you are talking about the flanges that connect to the M70 down pipes correct or are you referring to the flanges from the manifold to the head? I just want to make sure I am giving the shop the correct guidance.

    4) Are you running the standard M70 spark plugs? Still running the stock coils, but there will be higher compression obviously, so want to put the right plugs in.

    5) How do we connect on the tune?

I was excited to see the great progress Tyler and crew have made. Both engines are pretty torn down. A couple of minor issues with the M73, but overall looks much better than my tired M70.
