Can anyone recommend a shop or place that makes hardtops for a 2.5 z3. If not where can I find one because apparently they don't make then anymore and eBay and craigslist don't have.
This forum mostly classified section, CL and Ebay are hit or miss. They are out there used all over the country, shipping is pretty tricky. I had one a while back and I picked it up myself in Boston, from VA. sold it to a guy in CA strapped it to a pallet carefully and it got there.
There is a want to buy in Classified right now so if your looking for ideas this is one choice. Keep looking you will find one.

metallic green located in new london, ct for 1500 with mounting kit
Z3lda - R.I.P. 7/6/13 crashed and burned, total loss.
And one like this with mounting kit is even better. Most sellers know what they can get for them and be prepared to change the color, but I have seen some mis-matched and look pretty damn good.
Still gotta get that thing to FL its only 20-24 hr drive, all the parts are there install it a go.
I saw one two months ago and the hard top meant nothing to me.
I was shopping for a Z3, test drove a 2000 at a Ford dealer, had an indie shop inspect it, and didn't like its history and condition. It had bad accident and leaky soft top. It did have a hard top on a dolly, and I looked up the cost of a hoist.
I think I could find the car again, and maybe the owner would part with the hard top. Black.
Hang in there we will find you one, already KY is closer than CT.
As implied above, widen your CL search to about 1000 miles. Most sellers will not have the mounting hardware. Do a quick search here to learn what you need and get the mounting kit installed first. Then when a top finally becomes available, you can jump into your car and go get it.

Good advice, most don't come with the mounting kit, I bought mine without the Kit and sold it with the kit but mostly the kit is not available with the top. Either way you can't go wrong, the kits are worth premium money too.
When I bought mine the kit was available from the Dealer, I don't know about now, and its even rarer to find a kit without a Top to go with it. Its a long shot but I'm sure there are lots of cars out there with the kit and the owners don't know it.
One in Cf section now in TX.

Alright thanks everyone another thing would you recommend getting the hard top or a new soft top for half the price?
And also my z3 is an 02 would I have to find a top that's from an 02 or would I be able to fit a different years roof on it?

If you have only one then Soft Top, once you put the Hardtop on its not a convertible anymore. You can't take the Hardtop with you in case it rains and enjoy the Top down cruising that you bought the Roadster for. If that's not why you bought it just get a car with a roof.
Just my opinion..
They key to finding a hardtop is "patience". I found one in Texas almost 2 yrs ago, (exact color as my car with hardware) but did not want to drive the distance plus I did not know much about removing the hardware from the other car to mine and installing the top. So, I declined the offer and passed it onto another forum member. I just recently found a top about 200 miles from where I live. Although I had to have the top painted and had to purchase a new hardware kit, I jumped on it. Also, I was very fortunate that the forum member selling the top helped install the top onto my car. My patience paid off. Just keep your eyes open on this and other forums. Also (on Ebay) often times, the seller of a car with a hardtop will sell the hardtop separately. You just have to contact them with an offer. Best of Luck!

I had a hardtop for my TR6, it look so good with it on, it looked alot like the Z3 hardtop. But the down side was
you had to have a place to store it and on trips you were stuck with it on, unless you do what I did one time
and that was to put it in the hotel room during the day----but if the weather changes then you are stuck and what
hassle it was. The reasons above is why you see so many come up for sale. The best of both worlds would be to
have a Surrey top (targa top) but none are made for our cars.
The company -Smooth Line- (used to be Parrish Plastics) makes many different nice looking aftermarket
hardtops for different cars (thats what I had I my Tr6) but none for the BMW.
Think of it as more of a seasonal top, the FL guys use it for the summer when the AC is on and the Yankees use for snow season, I cringe every time I see a soft top in the snow, or worse, Icy conditions. Since I'm right in the middle I didn't really need it for either of these reasons and I don't DD so I let mine go to pay for some go fast parts. And in the rare case you have top adjustable rear shocks forget about what you have to do to make adjustments with the HT on. I even considered removing the soft top altogether like the spec Miata guys do but I wanted to keep some street useability.

Here's one for SoCal guys.
Just a note to let you know that I bought my "new" dealer hardware kit at Tomkinson BMW parts.com for $355.00 plus shipping $16.00. You might check it out before purchasing any hardware for a hardtop. Plus, it will be under warranty for 3 yrs.
Set up eBay alerts for "z3 hard top" and "z3 hardtop". As one of the posters above stated, patience is key! I have been looking for over 3 years for one that was relatively close and a reasonable price. I found one listed buy it now in Cleveland for $150! I figured they forgot a "0". Bought it and sure enough the seller replied back that with tax it would be $161 something. Ordered the mounting kit and hex key at the dealer on Tuesday, got the kit and installed it on Thursday, picked up the top with its cover Friday and drove it home (400 miles round trip). The only drawback is that it is Atlanta blue and my car is titanium silver. Even with a repaint i still got a steal! Hang in there and keep your eyes open. They take up a lot of space in storage, so if you wait it out, you will find one from someone who values their space. One thing to consider is that the mounting parts and hex key seem to be getting scarce new. The dealer told me that there were only 2 hex keys and 6 mounting kits in the US when I bought them, not sure about overseas quantities though. May want to consider at least the key ($25) if you are trying to pick a hard top up eventually.
I had a bit of a hard time connecting with one and ultimately resorted to calling autotrader private sellers that had hardtops listed with their Z3 for sale that they would be willing to sell alone. Found one just a couple of hours from me that way.

I got one in Orlando.
Come get it.
White is Right, Steel Grey is OK, but Estoril is the only color that truly matters.
I like Coupes.
