Cheapest way to ship mounted wheels and tires?

I found a set of used wheels and tires, but the shipping is proving very expensive. We've inquired through UPS and Greyhound. The cheaper of the two is Greyhound, but they're still pretty pricey. How have you guys done it, and who was the cheapest way to go. We can just wrap them in plastic or something, right? I'm hoping there's no need to box them up. Thanks.

I just got back from fedex and they wanted $240 from California to New York for 4 wheels and tires. I brought one front wheel to them and it was 19x8.5 with a 235-35-19 tire and the weight was about 49lbs. So with that estimate the informed me it would be about $240.00. I hope this helps.

Before the BAN HAMMER comes down on me I do have a serious suggestion. Try going to a tire store and ask them how to ship wheels and tires on the cheap. They might know.

Stick a label on it. Make sure you use 2-3 layers of hard cardboard to cover the front (face) of the rim so that it doesn't get scratched etc.


UPS Ground, each wheel should be like $25.

I use that method all the time plus use clear box take and just wrap the crap out of it. Cross country for my usually around $160 for a full set. Take some but not all the air out. to reduce some cost

I did the tire rack wrap and added some clear wrapping that I got in a roll from u-haul. FedEx Home was the cheapest method.

I had a set sent that was wrapped in Plastic wrap with the wheel faces covered in cardboard. The second set that was shipped was packaged in boxes with Styrofoam all around them. Both I think were sent UPS from California to Washington for around $150

This is a great way -- I've shipped mutiple sets like this, and received mutiple sets like this.

I did Forward Air once too. Good rate, PITA if you're not near an Airport.

I much prefer Fedex or UPS with the above shipping method.

Did you think of http://www.uship.com/ ? It is a network of independent shippers that bid for loads. There is a TV show about some of them which I hope is not the cream of the crop. You are in Houston so depending on where your tires are it would probably be an easy and cheap add on for them. You might want to check it out. You might get lucky if it does not have to be on a tight schedule and find someone that is delivering something in your neighborhood.

OEM coupe wheels with tires from Chicago to Nashville were $125. You have to take to their shipping location and delivery is to their shipping location not your front door but saved $100 so it was worth the slight inconvenience.

When I shipped a set of tyres, I took them to a UPS package store. Staff v. knowledgeable & helpful. Game is to watch size & weight thus the best price for what I was shipping was to package them in pairs to get the cheapest rate. By the way you want to add air not take it out!

Yeah, it was right around $150 for a set of 4 wheels. They were 19" with tires, and each box weighed about 50lbs each. UPS Ground is the way to go, although I used my company's UPS WorldShip Account, so there was a bit of a discount compared to just dropping it off at a UPS Store.

One wheel / tire face up, padding/cardboard, another wheel / tire face down on top. Tie together with industrial zip ties and ship with UPS. You'll get nailed with an oversize charge, but it's not a big deal as you'll only be shipping two packages instead of four.

A greyhound bus/freight is also pretty inexpensive if a terminal is convenient.

+1 on the cardboard and shrink wrap. As a caution, label the inside of the wheel if the outer 'wrap' gets lost. I've had one come up missing before and the inside label is the ONLY reason it was found.

Shipped from Minnesota to Virginia for $130 bucks picked up from my house by UPS. Fedex wanted over $200, and pretty much the same for UPS if I would have gone through them directly.
