Thumbs down Protect your Rights: Pending HID Regluations.

The NHTSA is solicitating comments from the public on HID lighting, among other things. Apparently a few hundred bluehairs and old farts have written in pissing and moaning about the "glare" caused by HID lighting, and want such lighting banned, regardless of how good a light source it is and the increased safety realized by it.

If you'd like to voice your opinion on the matter, you can go here and register on the DOT website. Once registered, you can log in and submit a comment (box on the right). You'll want to submit a comment for Docket number 8885 under the NHTSA administration. The title of the document is Glare from Headlamps and other Front Mounted Lamps, and the full text of it can be found here.

Everyone please read up on this information if you enjoy the use of your aftermarket lighting products.

Ill stand behind the issue only if it applies solely to SUV's with HIDs, regardless if they are aftermarket or stock. That is just wronnng. SUV's and trucks sit way higher than other cars, and blind the hell outta you. They *should* be banned.

What about bulbs, does this affect the sale of HID bulbs to the public? What if i wanted to switch my stock 4300k for 5k or higher??

The current laws about headlights dates back to something like the '70's and should be reviewed. Although many people are in favor of running any kind of light they want to as long as it 'conforms' to the guidelines, some of the newer lights are very distracting and potentially dangerous. Do I personally like the newer blue lights for example? No. Do they bother me? Hell yes. Would I file a complaint about a particular individual? No. Would I vote to redo the laws? Yes.

I have 6k HIDs on my car and I spent a lot of time adjusting them so as not to blind anyone. I also asked my friends if they were overwhelmed by my headlights as I drove behind them on the FWY. Both said that they didn't have a problem with them other than the fact that they liked looking at them (unsafe at HWY speeds ). I never get any comments or looks when driving, and cops don't pay attention to me either, even when I'm driving directly behind them. I would venture to say that if adjusted properly, the HIDs are safe and not intrusive. I have seen cars, SUVs, and trucks with misaligned headlights and high discharge bulbs. The high riding SUVs and trucks are the worse, as the light illuminates the whole interior and it is very hard to see when all the mirrors are reflecting the light right into my eyes.

NHTSA should pay attention more to MISAIMED SUV and some old cars front-mounted light instead.

most HID did not do glare to my eyes, but a raised-SUV headlight glares me like some flashbang thrown in front of my face.

offtopic: which one is more dangerous, a raised SUV or a lowered sedan ?

Why don't they start regulating the fact that people drive SUVs with only one person in them, when they are suited for 7. Let's regulate that. Or maybe all the gas they waste? Or how about putting a governor of 70mph on every car. Then no one could speed. Or maybe we could just ban driving and make everyone take public transportation. Or we could ban whistle tips.... :

yeah, governments are hypocrite, if they put speed limit of 65/70 mph, they can enforce putting speed governor of 70 mph on every car manufactured, so nobody speeding, nobody gets ticket, and there's no need for police chase.

You guys that think HIDS = being blinded make me laugh. A properly aimed set of HIDs will not blind you at all, in fact it will be easier on your eyes than regular lights that spread light everywhere. And regular lights can blind just as much when they're not aimed right.

I think everyone should go to that site and comment about how much SAFER HIDs are as they allow greater visibility while reducing glare for other drivers when properly aimed ... because that's the truth.

miss my rieger 3, but love my new S2000!
i agree...properly aimed they are not a problem.

speaking of which however, my HIDs are mis-aligned, and i really need to adjust them.

luckily i don't drive very much at night, but i know that is extremely dickish of me to be driving around like that.

so can anyone offer me some help on how to adjust ellipsoids and at what point are they appropriate?

Okay, I submitted my comment, and I urge everyone else to do the same. PLEASE use proper grammar and spelling though. Nothing ruins an idea like poor sloppy phrasing.

    I agree 100%!

Type it in word and spell check it. Then read it over if you have to!
