Ok, so the first iS I looked at got scooped up from right under my nose. I guess these cars are in pretty high demand in so cal. Anyway, I looked at another car today.
'90 325iS
Sterlingsilber w/ grey leather.
Clean exterior/interior, save for a bit of bolster wear
109k miles
No accidents, kept up on maintenance.
Driver Side Door Lock is broken (he unlocks the car from the trunk lol)
Original iS lip has been replaced (this one's unpainted).
Small Ding under Rear License Plate (I didn't even notice it)
OBC Light needs replacement.
Owner says it uses about 1 qt every 2-3k miles.
The car was in the trader for $5200, but no one bought it. He then put it in the paper for $4800. I've made an appointment to take the car in to Service Specialists in Downtown SD to have the car looked at. The guy just bought an SVT Focus (nice car, might I add), and I get the feeling that he's not in a hurry to sell it, but he doesn't really need the money. I, being a starving student, have to make every penny count.
Where should I start at? I'm thinking of starting around $3800-4000, and working my from there. Also this depends on the outcome of the inspection. Any thoughts? TIA.
i'm not digging the oil burn... i would think it should take a little longer to drink a quart, especially for only 109,000 miles (which is something to look into... that's pretty low) ... but i could be wrong
i love sterling silver, but do'nt like grey interior

Get it taken to a reputabile shop and have them do a pre-inspection. They will find out the problems with the car, have them do a leakdown and compression test to see what is wrong with the motor if it is eating that much oil.
After they tell you everything that is wrong, you could show it to the owner, and get him to bring down his price some, depending on what work needs to be done.
