Guess What......it seems I always end being a social case..........nut.......whatever you wanna call it......it so hapens that I lent a good buddy of mine some quid and he blew it all away and all that he could do was give me his 1998 SMG M3 Convertible Euro spec to settle the debt......well before you guess again....you probably already know the reason why I am posting here.....the vehicle does not engage its smg and to even tow it to my place of residence, I had to get a lowbed truck.....
Have read a few of the forums here and let me start by saying that all you guys have huge gondolas......waaaaaaaaaaaw.......to attempt things like a conversion frm smg to manual.....totally amazing.......congrats to whoever got it right.....an F1 career is waiting in the wings!!!! Most definitely!!
That said, guys I desperately need your help! I live in India and due to the prohibitive import rules in the past & present, few of these kind of womds(weapons of mass destruction) were imported thus to get technical info is virtually impossible. Therein starts my problem.........could somebody please, please, please give me the exact details on how to convert an SMG gearbox to manual.I am willing to shop a conversion kit from either Zionsville autosport or UUC..but from what I have read, there is more to just swapping the transmission. Has any one of you guys got the whole process in pics, wording & details on the electronics that need to be sorted to get this womd up and running.....sorry about this whole thread again.it is just that apart frm being a ardent car magazine fan, I have no experience whatsoever in the complex yet alluring world of cars....
Why do you need the part number of part 5, it is inside the gearbox already.

Yes I am doing the same as TomasS I do not have that spring either...I am just going to try it without that spring.

Without the spirng, the gear shift can move freely between 1-2 and 3-4 and will not automatic center in 3-4.

ill have to check, if not I think I can come up with something. I realize that is the helper for mid shift location. I dropped my bell housing off to a shop that does my transmission work so they can machine the bores since our angle plate has come missing for our CNC at work...
I dont think that sping or something like it will be too difficult to locate.

OK I now have the program in my CNC for machining these holes and cutting the C-Clip slot.
Anyone that needs their bell housing converted let me know. We can do the conversion and we are located in Houston. The turn around time will be 3 days provided the CNC is not busy.
I will post pictures once i finish installing the stuff in it later today.

Hi zparker, thanks for the pic, the holes look nicely machined.
Be aware that if using bearing with any diameter size other than 22mm, it will seriously affect gear shifting on 1st and 2nd gears. We tried using a 21mm and ended up removing the gear box again and replacing it with a exact 22mm diameter bearing.

I am not seriously worried about this, I use 1st and 2nd gear leaving the pits only. 3456 are my important gears. But mine is a track only car. 1st and 2nd are not an issue with the larger bearing.

With a bigger bearing, you will need to move the shift a bit over the "Reverse" gear position and have the reverse locking pin compress a bit in order to get into the 1st gear slot. As reverse locking pin spring is relatively hard, you may have problem on shift to 2nd gear, as the compressed reverse locking pin will force the shift back to neutral position.
Suggest you to try the complete shift mechanism with the gearbox assembled before putting it back to the car.

Hi I am currently looking at converting my SMG to a five speed manual as the SMG is fooked, the actuator is knackered and it burnt out my clutch n flywheel. Clutch n flywheel replaced tho ...now for the SMG to be removed ...PLEASE HELP !!
Please could you advise me the parts required to do this and step by step instruction in laymans terms; including nicce pretty pics n diagrams if possible :-)
My car is a 1998 BMW M3 Evo 3.2 convertible. I have purchased the five speed gearbox on its own...but obviously require gearstick, clutch pedals etc.
I also believe that the engine can stop working if the SMG ecu etc is not altered or bypassed.???
Any help..much appreciated

i did something similar, but with a 6 speed box
you should be able to get a shifter / shift knob / shift boot fairly easily either new or second hand. try a wrecker first but make sure the shift bushings are decent
i would buy a brand new clutch pedal, as i found the used one i got to be a bit sloppy.

i would recommend dodging the OEM clutch pedal bushings as they fail over time. i got my delrin clutch pedal bushings from AKG motorsport

then you'll need the clutch master / slave cylinder and all lines / grommets etc

you need parts 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,13,23,24,22,21,14,18,17 on the diagram as far as i know
23,24,22 can be replaced with a HEL braided clutch line, which you can get off eBAY etc and is probably a better way to go
Once the SMG computer is removed, your car won't start anymore. This is because your main computer waits to get an "OK" from the SMG computer before it will let you start.
All you need to do is "trick" the start recognition relay by wiring it so it always sees the "OK" from what it thinks is the SMG computer
This is explained earlier in this thread with diagrams. I would definitely recommend reading over this thread multiple times as it answers all of your questions!
All of the above diagrams / part numbers etc also assume you have a RHD car
The last thing to consider is any driveline compatibility issues with the 5 speed - I don't know the answers here as I used the 6 speed. I am not sure if the 5 speed just marries up with the clutch / driveshaft but I'm sure its probably been tried before so the info should be out there.

Interesting the differences one finds......I have the electrical diagram for M3 1998-AG which includes the SMG wiring, and pin 19 is the output for the secondary air pump (double relay) and pin 80 is the input for the clutch switch ( also referred in the description as Gear Recognition), no mention anywhere for a gear indicator switch.
Even though pin 80 is on the pinout list, there is no reference to it in the drawings-hence the question, how is it really connected?
About the only way to find out is to bell out the wiring between pin 80 and the switches and between the switches and ground ( switches being switch plugs for clutch pressure and gear position).
"engine may then stall as there is not enough fuel to keep the engine running" - I have the vacuum line removed from the regulator, so providing full fuel pressure under high vacuum and it has had no effect, so possibly its affecting the response time of the ICV ?
