Would it make any difference that it's a grey market?

It might if the VIN you are giving me is different from the VIN originally given to the vehicle by BMW. I'm not sure how Grey Market cars work. Do they use the original VIN or are they given a "new" VIN so that they can be registered in the region?

My report came back with the prod date:
    Prod. date 1988-10-06

    Is this October 6, 1988, or June 10, 1988?

That would be October 6, 1988. You'll notice in my first post, my Prod. Date shows up as 1989-08-26 or August 26th, 1989.

It seems that I cannot decode 7-digit VIN numbers, ie. early cars. Or at least it's not very common. It doesn't seem to show me anything for the older cars in general. I don't think I've been able to decode anything made before 83/84. But, I haven't really been paying attention to every VIN I decode either. There's only one way to find out. If you have an older car, post your VIN and we'll see what happens.

RickSloan, I'm guessing the 7-digit VIN is from the E12? No info came up for it.

PS-- Can I assume that the "ELEK*****CH.SCHWAR STOFFVERDECK" is the black electromechanical convertible top cover material?

I'm not sure about that one. I've never done a Carfax, but I would assume they use the entire VIN number to retrieve that information. It's worth a try if you can get someone to do it for free.

On page one, post #24, there is a link to a site that might help you decipher what that means.

funny you mention that. when i did that years back, i found an old sheet all in german with the vin and the breakdown. looks like it was meant to be there.

btw, chris you are still keeping stong and props to you on that!
