Looks nice! (of course maybe that's just the buff-out and your photo skillz )
Yeah... the tensioner prob aint' gonna do poop if its really got guide problems. Does it make the sound all the time or just cold-starts? Drop the lower oil pan and check for plastic bits, thats the telltale.
Yes compared to 'traditional BMW' type cars this car does feel muscley... the slushbox probably contributes to that in the "just mat the pedal and go" stoplight feel.
Do you still have the 3er or did you ditch it?

Nope! Still have the 3 series for fun. The 3er is alot more engaging to drive since it's a stick shift, has much better steering, the sound of the inline 6 also sounds more...complex? But man it's so slow now that I've driven the 540. Driving the 3er, it seems like I'm waiting for 80mph to arrive even as my foot is planted all the way to floor as the engine is screaming haha.
The touring is for work, I haul alot of boxes and equipment and it was just not manageable in the 3er without taking up all the seats and trunk. With this I can at least haul gear and haul crew as well, or just haul a ton of gear with the seats folded down AND not worry about not having enough power when the car is weighed down.
I was looking at the 525it and 528it, but felt that wouldn't have had enough power considering the stuff I'd haul, 184 hp is totally underpowered for a car of this size, (i don't even now why they made a wagon with that engine), and the mods I also want to do to the wagon which is put bigger wheels on. I feel like 18 inchers on a 2.5 or 2.8 wagon would make it woefully slow.
There is a inital cold start rattle but it goes away right afterwards. I don't plan on replacing the guides for another 10,000 miles, just don't have the finances at the moment. I think they're fine for now, but hopefully an oil change, new engine mounts and a tensioner will delay it bit if they haven't started to deteriorate... =X.
two dumb questions
1. is it normal to have to slam the glass to get it to close fully? ive tried lubricating, but it still takes a bot of force or a good slam.
2. the msport cars: were they a lower ride height from the factory?
Mine needs a firm hand, but not slamming - you mean the tailgate glass, right, not the whole hatch. There are sport springs and regular springs - 2003 m-sport should use the sport part.
The glass itself, yyes. The spft close for the whole hatch works great after cleaning and lubricating. Just bothers me i have to slam the glass.
Were the msport springs lower, though?
The Sport models sit lower than stock cars. Now do the M-Sport models sit even lower? No idea

I just picked up a 1999 540 as a project car. The glass section of the tailgate doesn't close all the way and the top seems to be high on the drivers side and low on the passengers side. I saw there is a section in the TIS on adjusting the tailgate, is that what needs to be done or is there something else going on here?
Might want to start your own thread on that.
What does it look like with:
A. the glass up / open looking into that hinge area... and
B. the actual hatch open looking into that hinge area...?
I'm leaning 'something else going on' but a couple pix of whats going on up around the hinges area might be revealing.

I concur. On my E61 I literally removed the halos since the optics are terrible and installing LED halos is a bit played out at this point and I prefer to simple, cleaner look without any circles in the design. On the E39 they were coded out but left the rings in place since the headlight would go from OEM+ to looking like a cheap aftermarket offering without the contrast they offer.
Amen to that. I still like the E39 halos cuz they were the car that really brought them to popularity, and I have replaced my bulbs w LEDs (albeit warmer toned, not mega-blazing, so they remain low key), but yeah... so tired of seeing AE retrofits on anything and everything.

Haha you all are crazy, I dig the DRL's. On my E36 they are out of place but I like them on the wago. I see enough of the cheapo AE installs on the e36 forum so I can agree with you all on that.
I love my halos, that's like a classic E39 element to me. No DRL + constantly on halos is my preferred look.
