hey-
i know that a S52 (e36 m3) engine can take a M62 (e39 540i 6mt), Can a N62 run a M62 transmission? Can a N62 run a S52 zf 5mt or a S52 run a N62 6mt?
N62 is the v8 4.8 found in 550i E60, 650i, etc. Compatible with the 4.0 liter, Very similar to the 335i twin turbo trans's 6mt, but not completely sure on the differance. Real oem lists this trans with a RMFD msrp of ~ 3600. the e46 M3 6mt has a RMFD msrp of ~$5500!! so def not the same trans.
52 bellhousing compatibility: 1991-1999 inline 6 dohc. it's also compatible with S54 6mt bellhousing, and all of the e46 inline 6 motors.
Can a N62 run a S52 zf 5mt or a S52 run a N62 6mt?
so the ZF trans that zionsville sells in the kit is inline 6 only trans?
I came across a good deal on an almost new N62 6mt trans, thats all. I own a e36, so you see where that leads.
I have not seen what Zionville sells. I only know that on BMW engines, the v-8 have their own unique bellhousing pattern (maybe the V-10 and later N62 engines, haven't compared), The V-12 have their own unique bellhousing pattern and there are at least 2 inline 6 cylinder patterns which ate different from those above.
In many cases the trans may have the same guts and rear portion of the case looks the same but the bellhousing is cast onto the front of the case, is not separable so it is designed for a particular engine series.
gotcha. so will a N62 6mt bolt on to a M62? or only e34 and 39 6mt is compatible, and e60 no go?
I believe that all V-8 and the V-10s share the same bell housing attachment bolt pattern. I have not seen or had a N62 engine in my hands to play with yet, but I am guessing they would be the same.
According to the ETK, the E60 M5 6 speed uses the same trans as the 550.
The bellhousing is one issue, the other is the length of the input shaft and the other is the placement of various sensors that would use the flywheel as a source. Earlier V-8 (M60) used a toothed vibration damper and later M62 used teeth around the flywheel/flex plate for engine electronic timing.
hmm. well, if you search CL for bay area bmw parts you'll see the trans im talking about. 08 550i 6mt, I was shopping for a 540i (prefer dead auto trans), u think a pre 99 single vanos M62? (the 4.4 96-98), or will a dual vanos 99+ be needed? I saw somone mentioning in a parallel forum that a 4.4 e39 v8 longmotor could be converted to
use in a E34 540 with cam sproket and trigger sensor swap, is the 4.4 e39 motor late model cam trigger or crank trigger sensor around the flywheel?
Did you ever find out if the N62 MT bolts to the M62 engine?

It’s common knowledge that I6 fits I6, that’s not what this is about. This is about V8 fitting I6 - which they do not - and the original post is wrong in saying that they do. They are the same trans but different bellhousing. People really need to stop necro’ing this thread.
BMW's historically tend to be designed very close to other models. I guess I should have elaborated, but the point of my post was more so that if I6 boxes can fit with a simple enlargening of the holes, then depending on how far off the holes are - as per uhoz's post - then maybe an N62 MT can bolt to an M62 with some minor modification. The N5x boxes hang off all but 1 mounting point. If the N62 MT mates to a few bolts on the M62 then it stands to reason that it may work if the others could be made to fit.

Dude, stop talking. They’re not even remotely the same. What exactly have you been doing the past 11 years and 25,000 posts? Clearly it’s been nothing BMW related.
