Starter doesn't want to engage flywheel

Hey Guys, I recently put in a new s50 engine turbo'd and swapped out my auto to a manual tranny. I went to start the car and the starter just spins freely. I took off the starter and bench tested it and it was fine. It seems like the flywheel is too far for the gears to engage? I am at a lost is their a spacer or something that i may have put on wrong to push the flywheel farther away? Any help would be awesome!
    thanks

There isn't a spacer. Hard to say what happened. You still have the old flex plate from the auto right? Measure the OD of ring gear and see if the flywheel from the new setup measures the same. Also check the offset from the back of the flex plate to the ring gear. Transfer that to the flywheel on the manual setup. Between the two, you'll find an answer.

Unless the starter from an auto is different than that of a manual, which I do not know.

Did you follow the auto/manny swap instruction properly?
    Were there instructions?

Did you check realoem.co m to see if the starters are different?

Did you get the correct flywheel?
