Hey guys,
My drivers side window has been having issues for a long time now.. before hand it would just go down very very slowly. Would also make some weird noises. Also in the last few days, when the window goes up right as it stops theres sort of a loud bang/knock when it gets there.
Also sometimes, the "auto-up" wouldn't work... i.e. even if i push the button hard i'd have to hold it for the window to go up, but i'm not sure if that's related.
a new motor is $160 at bimmerparts so its not *terrible*, but i'm wonderiing if its a DIY job or not..
Comments please, thanks

Try lubricating the window tracks before moving on to more expensive fixes. I bought a tube of BMW Gummi-Pflege from the dealer ($7.50), and my driver's side window doesn't squeak like it used to before I applied the lube.

i have a loud bang when my window is goin up and down...i took off the door panel and there are wire holders or somethin on the top left of the door, on the right of the door lock that get in the way of the window...i dont know what they are, but i noticed thats wat was making the loud banging...if that helps...

My driver side window goes up and down in increments of 1 and half inch. I have to keep tapping the button to get it all the up or down.
What it used to look like
Yah, my window died yesterday. Was closing it and it made a loud BANG. halfway up. It apparantley came out of the tracks and was lopsided... the window was not making any contact with the B pillar at all.. in fact ithere was about a 2 inch gap. Took it to the shop, they replaced the window regulator clips (plastic things, few bucks a peice)... and had to bend back the window regulator. A new one is on order...
cost - $55 to bend back current regulator to close window. $88 for window regulator. $92.50 for one hour labor.
TOTAL - $240 or so

Roman,
what kind of places do you go to , that charge $92.50/hr?
For future needs I'd recommend the Monterey shop (Monterey Bay Motor Works: www.mbmw.com , 831-899-4742 )
They charge $75/hr...and last time I went there for the suspension check up...they wasted 25-30 minutes on that and refused to get paid for it. Now that's service

Current: '08 Suzuki GSXR 1000; '08 HD Street Bob

Theres two bmw shops in Santa Cruz, Catalpa Street Garage ($95/hour) and Nate Smith's Optimal Auto Care ($92.50/hour). Most BMW shops charge between 90-100/hour and dealer charge about 130-140/hour.

well mine acted like that, until the window regulator clips snapped and the window fell out of alignment. basically when i tried to close the window the window would move towards me. anyways all i did was buy new clips, bend the regulator arms, and now it is fine.

Yah they had bent the arms back but told me I shouldn't open the window again because it may fuck up again. Are they blowing smoke up my ass? Maybe so. But somehow I trust these guys.. *shrug*

My window had the same problem two years ago (a large bang and the window was hanging at an angle). I opened the door panel and found that one of the small plastic regulator clips had busted. Bought the clips at the dealer and replaced them myself.Originally posted by volfman

but for all you who dont know how to fix this, if it is the regulator clips, there is a tutorial on this with good pictures at www.understeer.com . thats what i used as a guide.

Sometimes on the driverside window when I use the auto down, when it reaches the bottom I have the "BIG BANG". I know something is going to break soon. Just waiting for the time to check it out.

I don't know if you guys know about this problem, but on my convertible the windows have that feature where they kinda slide down a little when you open the door to make clearance for the convertible top, and then when you close the door they slide back up automatically. Well lately they won't do that anymore, and I have to lower the window a little before I get out, close the door and then lock the car and roll the window up by using the key. It's a pain in the ass, does anyone know how to fix that or what is causing this? Thanks

The current concensus is that the only way to fix it is to get a new (or used) regulator. I'm headed to the junkyard this summer to get a regulator for my car. However, the engineer in me thinks that it has to be a fairly simple fix (probably just one IC that went bad), but I just don't have the time to delve into it.Originally posted by MaaadNYCe

The rivet (yes, rivet, not bolts) that connect the window control arm (?) to the motor came off. I have no idea how to put the rivet back so I had to get a mechanic to put it back together. :
