Have a 2001 520i since new. Now done 120000 miles and recently drinks more oil than petrol (almost - 2-4 pints every 500 miles).
No obvious leaks (or oil spills in the driveway), no blue smoke even when revved hard, no oil in the cooling system. My mechanic has no idea and nor have I but the unreliability of it makes it a tough car to drive now when I used to love it to bits.
Anyone had a similar experience? Any thoughts what the problem might be?
Thanks guys in anticipation of your help.
me too, i eat nuff oil, i cant find any leaks or anything like that...

The cause could be a failed CCV. A crankcase pressure test will tell if the CCV's internal diaphram has failed as is causing oil to be pulled through the intake.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks for the thought. Would it be easy/inexpensive to do or am I looking at a new mortgage?
I am curious too
