Does this cable exist? To attach to a head unit using the aux in feature, but connects to the ipod through its line out AND charges it?
None of the ipod integration options are perfect.
I don't have a picture of it handy, but we use a piece called the SIK IMP.

I have them available for $27.95, and it provides both charging capabilities and a line output, both through the dock of the iPod.
Give us a call if you'd like to pick one up...

Monster Cables makes one. It's a cigarette lighter plug-in charger, and has a line out jack. I used to use that before i got a deck w/ ipod integration.

This is the one.
Very cool, either of those would work.
Can I cut the plug off and hardwire it, or is there a fuse or something in the plug so I'd have to keep it?
I don't really know, although i would suggest against it, as the monster cable one is set up to only charge when necessary and not charge when the battery is full. If you cut off the end, you'll likely be getting rid of that feature.
Maybe you could hardwire it by soldering power leads to the terminals on the plug and just throwing some heatshrink or tape on it to keep it safe and secure. Then just hide the plug back behind the sunglass holder. Not sure if this would actually work, but it's a thought.

Thanks for the info.
I hate how the E36 leaves the ac plug on when the car is shut off, so when you go to get out you need to shut the car off, pause the ipod, unplug the charger, etc.
well, w/ the monster cable one that i suggested, i was able to just unplug it, and it would automatically pause the ipod. I think that's actually an ipod feature, rather than the monster cable charger though.
As i side note, i personally like the fact that the cigarette lighter is powered even when the car is off. It allows you to charge your cell phone or something while you're not actually in the car w/ it running.
Whup, it looks like that Monster Cable one doesnt have an audio output.
The one Jason@Bav posted would work. I'll order one later today. Too bad it's white and I'm going to pull the 1/8 jack connection out all the time.
It does have one. It doesn't say so on the site, but it does, you can see it right next to the dock connector. I know this for sure because i've had 2 of these, and have been using them for the past 3yrs (until it got stolen and i ended up getting a headunit w/ ipod integration ) It's even mentioned a couple times in the Reviews on the site.
Also, not to knock BSWs recommendation, but i think the monster one is a lot cleaner looking, being that it's black, and there aren't a bunch of plug connections on it.
