The airbag light came on, and my Indy mechanic (whom I trust) traced it first to the front pax airbag, but it checked ok. Now he says it is the control module under the center console. I wonder if the module is really bad, or if maybe the connectors have gotten dirty. Anybody with some experience here?
Thanks.

If the SRS fault is for the passenger air bag firing circuit and the air bag has normal resistance (~2 ohms), a fault in the wiring or SRS module would be the likely causes. Before replacing the SRS module it would be advisable to ohm out the wiring from the SRS module connector to the air bag.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Can this be done without disconnecting the module?

No. To run the wiring check both ends of that circuit have to be disconnected.
And to check te resistance of the airbag without risking accidental firing a meter with a "diode safe" resistance function is needed. most modern digital multimeters will have that capability.
