    Exclamation Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

I have only had my car a couple of months now. When I first got my car I never checked on the type of fuel I should be using so I have been using a lower octane. Well I was on empty a couple of days ago, and my cars performance the past couple of days was not so hot. So I checked the manual and it says I should be using 90RON or above. So I am like you stupid POS why did you not read this! So I have probably been micro pinging the last three months, and probably done some irrevocable damage to my engine, but now I am usning high grade stuff. All I have to say is I am getting unnatural acceleration. My car is amazing with my intake and proper gas. I hit 120 right out of the box with it, as before I was struggling to get to 110.

Actually, my car is so fast now, I am kind of scared, I think I need to slow down...

i always use high octane with any car, its just cleaner. i get better gas mileage and performance out of my car as well. some argue that lower grade is better for the car's combustion, but with my chip that i put in it requires me to put high octane. it pays in the long run to use the good stuff.

What type of gas milage are you getting?

I usually do not get on the freeway much, but here are my stats.
On an average befrore my CAI I was getting 19.2MPG, then with my CAI I get 19.6MPG. And when I am on the freeway I get around 31 to 32'ish.

i average about 24 mpg city/highway, city i get about 20 and highway about 28-30, so we have about the same mileage. i have intake, exhaust and chip.

    20/29

I get 20-21 in the city and 28-29 on the highway. Right now its lower because I have some problems. But next week that will be fixed.

I have used 92octane since day one

Hype, I doubt you did any harm to your engine.... If pinging does damage, I think it would be loud enough to hear it, plus I would guess the knock sensors would tone things down a little to keep your engine from pinging.....

    ~22-23 city, ~28-30 hwy.....

I dont have the computer in my car but i get around 330miles per tank.. which is how my needle got stuck BTW..! Going that low to see how many miles I can get with this new diff. I was getting around the same Miles per tank before my diff. Changing the tranny fluid really helped the mileage for me. Then swapped the diff and changed to synthetic diff fluid also must of helped as well.

I agree with RS - the 328 like most BMW engines are equipped with knock sensors that retard the ignition timing even with the tiniest ping so it doesn't damage the engine - that's also why you were getting a lower top speed out of it.

Hats off the the bmw engineers.

My understanding is that the lower octane stuff shouldn't do any damage - your engine's computer will retard the ignition a bit to avoid pinging, keeping you from doing any damage and also keeping you from achieving optimum performance.

As for using high octane gas in any car, you should go by what the manufacturer recommends. If that's 87 octane, then you're wasting money putting in the good stuff and not getting enough performance gains to make it worth the extra $$ at the pump.

You've only had your car a couple months and you have 2500 posts??? I guess you should have paused on reading the board and been reading the manual.

I doubt you did any real damage to your car.... I have faith in the BMW.

Ya, I have been posting here since the day I got my car.
But I took my brothers advice on what gas to use, because he also had a 325, so I never read the manual. Note: My brother wrapped his bimmer around a tree, so never turst him...

You should always put the lowest octane that the manuf. recommends. Higher octane gas burns slower to prevent deto in high compression engines. If you have a car that runs a lower compression and you put in high octane gas you could do a couple of things 1) You waste your $$ or 2) You slow your car down. I had a friend that ran better on pump 89 gas than he did on 101 octane that he bought at a race track.
