Same Size Tires Different Size Rims?

My Pilot Sports on my '98 are down to the wearbars on the rear and are almost there on the fronts. I need new tires.

Since I just installed a coilover suspension, I was thinking of going 235-40-17 on all four wheels, in the hope of less understeer and getting better balance. I plan to do this using my stock staggered wheels (7.5" front, and 8.5" rear).

Here's my question: Will it help? Will the different size of the f&R wheels nullify the handling benefit of using the same size tires? No track/autox is contemplated.

    TIA,

    Andy

BMW shipped the 95 Lightweights in exactly that configuration, never heard anyone complain about the handling.

That's what I have on my car. Works just fine, meaning, I didn't fly off the track with this setup.
