    Turbo and 535i engines

First what are the differences in the e28 and e34 engines such as exhaust manifold and intake manifold bolt up.

Next is there much to do to install a turbo off a old 745i? I saw one on ebay and was just trying to get an idea of how difficult it is. Does the oil pan need to be tapped? Does the intake and exhaust manifold bolt right up. What size injectors are they? Just trying to get a price list going before anything.

I was thinking of maybe piecing one together but using many parts off of a 745i if I could.

    Thanks

Do you have a 535i? If so, your exhaust studs are 8mm and the 745i is 10mm. You can re-drill your head for bigger studs or get some special ones machined. Other than that, it will bolt right up. The only problem you would encounter is fuel management. A plug and play Megasquirt would be an easy and cheap route.

If it is the same listing I saw, it had all the wiring and ECUs from the 745i. If you were to swap this "complete" set-up into a manual e34 535i, what should you expect to stop working (speedometer, carputer, ...)?

Also, is the only difference in the turbo head the larger studs, or does the chamber design lower the compression ratio? If it does not lower the compression ratio, is the stock 745i head gasket different than the stock 535i?

745i head = lower compression ratio, 1mm smaller intakes, sodium filled exhaust valves, different cam, different head gasket, different exhaust gaskets (copper rings vs. fiber gasket). Not sure about the chamber design.

PM or search for the posts by Cereal Killa and Boosted535. Both are running 745i-based set-ups.

i think the 745i heads are b34 heads and the e34 are b35. The b35 heads are later model (obviously) and are better flowing i think. The block is the primary factor on compression ratio in this case.

also, the tach signal and fuel consumption are the signals from the ecu. Speedo is not effected.

The drop in compression comes from the deep dish pistons.
I have a stand-alone in my turbo 535 and everything works except the fuel consumption gauge. Most ECUs have a Tach output. And if you really wanted to you might be able to fake the fuel consumption signal.

I believe the ideal is b35 block with b34 head

... or maybe other way around? Perhaps I should have stayed out of this thread lol
