1995 OBD1 is the way to go!!!!!!! I was stupid enough to sell mine 2 years ago. The prices on the '95's are actually starting to go UP! Here is the search on AutoTrader for 95 M3's.

How much faster are you looking at? Go and do a driving school and take your car to the track, I will bet you can't push the car to it's limits!!!! If you want straight line fast than go and get a C5 ZO6.

Evos and WRX's have nothing on an M3's image and refinement IMO. Plus, M3s look AWESOME! :P

yep, no cheap way to boost a bimmer. buy the C5 Z06. you could probably sell your car and buy the vette and be almost even... depending on the year....

If you hate losing to the rice brigade....your best mod would be a high performance driving school and then lure them onto some of those great PA back roads. You will probably give them religion.

Keep the E46, but if you're really just dying for some big power then like others have said go get a Vette.

get some 4.10's, headers, exhaust, and software... you will be damn fast. and if you add a nitrous setup to that you will be close to 12 flat in the 1/4.

thats around 5-6K to run 12's... and still be in the luxury of the E46 M3. You have to remember this is a luxury vehicle. its got all the little extras and the nappa leather, etc... and its heavy. but the point is.. that there will always be faster cars out there, the questions is do you want be the fastest and have one seat in the car and nothing else with a giant turbo, etc, etc... or you do want to be on the luxury side which is much slower. Obviously we all want to be somewhere in the middle, the question is where.

If you can live with an E36, it will be much easier and cheaper to make 400+RWHP and you will run 11's most likely. Or you can stay with the E46 with those mods and run 12's, or even go with a totally different car that can be easily boosted past 500RWHP...

It's your car - do what your budget allows. Also, no matter how much you mod your car, there will always be cars that are _way_ faster.

You know what. I just got my 04 M3 three weeks ago. The very next day I got smoked, and I mean SMOKED, by a c5 z06.

I had a slight regret for maybe 1 or 2 seconds that I didn't go that route. But, that is the only thing that the z06 has on our cars. I feel that I have matured to the point where I don't lose any face by getting my doors blown off by a more powerful car.

I have nothing to prove to anyone else. All that should matter is if the car makes you happy. The style, performance, and driveability is exactly what I was looking for and I would have had regrets about any other choice, regardless of how fast it goes in a straight line.

Sure, I know I will want more power eventually. When I am good and ready, and have the money to do it right, I will supercharge or turbo the beast. But that will be for my own enjoyment, not because some ricers or V8 turds make fun of me.

the z06 in the right hand will also take a stock M3 on a road course as well. it felt a little big to me and i prefer the driver position, height, and view in an M3. I did not like the z06 as much but its still more performance than luxury and thats where the e46 falls short... its more luxury than performance.

thing is that many people want the creme de la creme of the series so they get an M3 but they really just wanted the highest level and then they complain that the SMG doesnt shift smooth or the car is too jerky or stiff etc... thats a more common problem with BMW's..

with the corvette z06 you wont see as many people just buying the z06 over the regular version just to have the best when they dont care a thing for performance. in fact most corvette buyers in general have some performance expectations unlike many BMW drivers.

but then the M3 GTR's owned the corvette c5r's and even thought the M3 had a v8 which is not stock.. the c5r does not use the same block as the z06 so its kinda even.

    anyway, back to the point...

you want to see a real difference...

the e46 M3's #1 bang for your buck mod is......

4.10 Gears... period. (if you are looking for something a little less extreme, 3.91)

Then I would go with the headers/exhaust/software.

after that you need to stop worrying about power and focus on suspension then brakes. the stock brake are actually pretty stout for a single piston setup, but the suspension is crap. once you have done all that, get some coilovers /springs&shocks, sway bars, and camber plates.

Once you get used to those gears and that power then worry about your next step. like nitrous or something.

Am I the only one that thinks that car looks ghetto? Take a nice M3 and tear it up like that.
