Hi, can anyone help, I have 1999 BMW E39 523I SE.
I have these warning ligts on my dash ABS, ASC and speedometer does not work. from all the info i have read i understand my rear nearside abs sensor is faulty. but just before i do anything i thought i i'll get a final opinion. am i right to change this sensor?

Before buying sensors, you might want to swap them (i.e. right to left, front to back) first to determine that it is, indeed, the sensor. If it is just the sensor, you should be able to identify that immediately through process of elimination.

You may also want to read some of the threads on this forum regarding failure of the Bosch ABS controller on this specific model year.

    Good luck.

mine was fixed by sending my ABS module to ModuleMasters and needed no further work once reinstalled... worth every penny of the $314 i spent!

I have done further research & I have to take into account the ABS module. The warning signs come on about half an hour of driving & speedometer stops working. Trip counter & milage freeze. Fuel guage goes bonkers (up and down).

I'll get my mechanic to swap the sensors and see how that goes. I have also found someone who would fix the ABS Module for £150 with 2 year warranty(if its faulty).

    THANKS for the help guys.

As a side note, you can always remove your ABS module for a long trip to keep those miles off! As far as I can tell, the 4 days that my module was at ModuleMaster were mileage-free!

ABS Module..... as stated above..... Too many vital organs go bad on these cars... Staring to get old.

If you are taking it to a mechanic, why not just have the codes read before pulling sensors and such? Codes read from a full-on diagnostic setup should tell you (and the mechanic) with some certainty at least where to start looking.

Phewwww! Its a relief the car will still run without the ABS Module (might have to send the Module for repair & dont want to be without a car).

I will get the codes checked and hopefully its not something major.

    Thanks
