I was wondering, is it possible to roll back miles on the odometer on an e36-or any bmw with digital odometer...
my friend is arguiging that you need a new cluster-they're impossible to roll back, but i know people in the east coast who charge like 500 or so and do it there... Is he right? You need a new cluster, it's impossible to roll mileage back? or what

new cluster
Im pretty sure it IS possible to change the mileage on a cluster (if you need a new cluster they CAN program the mileage into it) but you have to go through BMW NA I believe so I dont think its possible to defraud someone.

If you're talking roll back as in driving the car backward then NO. But BMW has the tool to set your mileage to a different number. Other than that I am sure there's always a not so legal way to have the mileage change.
If you get a new cluster and you don't transfer mileage from the ECU/DME to the cluster a light on it will turn on (it's a dot between mileage and trip). So you have to reset both eproms in the cluster and in the ECU/DME.

I doubt dealers have it, you probably have to fill out a lot of paper work just to get it done.Originally posted by Daved
Cool!!! Do you know how that tool is called? The $tealers got it?

Yeah, i said that other than the stealer- there are others who do this illegally, roll back the mileage by hooking it up to some sort of computer or tool or something

well you can't easily roll the milegage back, but you can disconnect the speedo, there by causing the mileage not to rack up...but then again you might have it recorded on your computer....why you wanna buy some high mileage car just kidding
I believe that by disconnecting the speedo, you cant see how fast you are goint.Originally posted by toofast4U

If you replace the cluster, isnt the actual miles stored in some computer?
Omied, I think it's safe to say I wasn't wrong.
You sure can roll them back. I bought mine and the odometer said 8475 and it definately had may more than that.

There was a news report a few weeks ago that showed how dishonest people have computer equipment that can hook up to a digital odometer and set it to any value whatsoever.
It is one of the reasons to get a CarFax on any car that you plan to purchase (you want to make sure that the mileage is correct).

Hi Omied,
Just hope I don't see your car listed in the For Sale section of BF! However, if you plan to trade the car in to the stealer, more power to you!

there are many ways to do this
the dealer can reprogram the mileage but only
if the cluster is broken and needs to be replaced
there are internet places as well
www.mileageman.com is one that will do it
if you provide documentation of why you want it done
also you can swap the back of the cluster
i have tried this and the little light did not come on
you have to perform a test as a bmw hidden feature
and the light will go on
and then it will reset both the cluster and dme
to the correct mileage.
i still have some cluster backs in my closet from
projects i have done
No, i don't have an e36 to post up for saleOriginally posted by Janolaw

Uhhhh my mechanic has a tool that does this... He has told me that customers come in and complain that they don't like the "way the odometer looks". So he fixes it for them and its only $50...
I would never really do that though b/c up here in Canada its an automatic $5000 fine for screwing around with the odometer, not really worth it...

Well that depends. If you have say a 95 M3 with 500k miles you might get like $8K for it. However, if it suddenly has 50k miles, well, you get the point ; )

I think topics like this one need to be closed as soon as they pop up.
I have known a few people who did this sh*t.
Sure, it's easily done with a device called Diaprog (about $5k if you buy it). It plugs into the round port undedr the hood and you can set your milage to whatever you want in less than 1 min. It is impossible to detect that the milage has been altered.Originally posted by iwannadinanm3

This device can often be found at used car dealers that specialize in BMWs......

As a precaution to buyers there are many ways on the E36 to defraud the mileage. Rollback is hard and not worth it, but you can change the cluster and the mileage on the new cluster will show up (no fault codes on any E36) to disconnect the mileage there is a sensor in the rear differential.
Wheels in Sig are SSR GT3's 19" E46 M3 fitment. Dinan E46 M3 Suspension. Pic thanks to Kyle K.
so can this be done if one wanted to rolll is back how would one go about it
