You go with some 2 1/2 inch stainless pipes, new catalytic converters, new resonators, and a good muffler.... thats the only advice I'll give you.... If you take any other alternative, you should sell the E46 and buy a civic...

a free mod would be to swiss cheese the (underside-prefiltered) airbox. This makes the intake a bit louder. You can't see that it has been done either so it still looks ok. I haven't done it but hey its free.

actually cutting the bottom off the factory airbox does increase the noise a bit and not an uncommon thing I did not do it but I helped a friend do it a year ago and he got some noise, has since sold the car and gone 4ring ()()()() crazy (Audi A4 2.0t that gets beat by me all day long)

a Cold air intake will help you with some nice deep sound. But why do you want a BMW to sound like a wind up car?

wow, honestly i would atleast buy a cat-back exhaust. When you go to sell the car and you and the buyer finds out that you cheaped out on the exhaust IMO all i could think is what else did he do to save a dollar here and there.

You can start by removing all the airbags and immediately running into a brick wall your head will be pounding from all the noise..
