Well I didnt replace mine myself but it doesnt look too hard to do. I'm not sure if you have unplug the battery or not though. I would get a Haynes or Bentley manual and see what it says.

jack up the car, find the O2 sensor (before the cats), unscrew it with a wrench. VERY EASY.

use to drive a 98 gtp with a few "go" mods92 Alpine White 325i
    from memory:

first off, you should make sure the code is correct.
im fairly sure the motronic code for the o2 sensor is 1222.

drop the exhaust from the headers completely, taking the heatshield off helps a buch too.
use the special socket you get at NAPA, replace it. your done.

took me about 3 hours to complete the job.

get 10, 13 and 14mm sockets and deep sockets.
extensions and flex joints for a 3/8s drive.

    not to bad.

also, disconnect the battery before you start, that way when you reconnect it, the code should clear.

There is NO NEED to drop the exhaust. Should take about 5 min and the socket makes it a 2 min job.

What makes it hard is if it's rusted. Spray some penetraing oil on it an hour before you unscrew it.

eh, i had to get at the driveshaft and tranny anyhow, but there is barely any room, next time it goes, i wanta see someone replace it without dropping the exhaust. on my car that is....

I've swapped the o2 sensor on a '95 325is using a normal 22mm wrench without dropping the exhaust. I lopped off the connector on the old o2 sensor so I could use the boxed end of the wrench to get more leverage to break it free.

depends, i have an auto tranny, and im not sure if the wheel base/exhaust is any differant. all i know is that i couldn't do it without dropping my exhaust completely.
