Maybe Gumbi can edit/delete fuddy's post?
quick question here do i have that "code on start up" feature on 2000 540i M6 with navigation (4:3)?
My 03 530 with NAV has it. It is an option menu on the NAV screen
PLEASE refer to POST #28 in this thread (which has instructions on how to set this OBC feature and is on PAGE #2). Even though you have NAV, the programing instructions are basically the same except you use your NAV screen instead of the MID. You have to initiate a CODE at each shut down to bar someone with a key from starting your car.
The CODE is used to disable the the car from someone who has access to the key...and this feature has to be initiated at shut down and only works for a single occurrence. The CODE initiation is not a recurring event (set once and forget). PLUS...when you lock the car with your key (either by remote or manually using the door lock cylinder)...your car is automatically "IMMOBILIZED" and can't be started unless someone has one of the keys to your car because each key contains an embedded trasnponder that has a specific ISN (individual serial number) assigned to your car by BMW.
And if you have your NAV owners manual...the instructions are printed there if you need more details.
(with ignition in position 1...you should see CODE highlighted on your NAV screen...select it and follow the instructions for setting and releasing the CODE feature)

I have a question, it is impossible to start the car without the key?!
And if the thief turn the ignition with a knife or something else, the car will not start?!
Q really needs to answer this for you, but I will make a lame attempt.
- If you engage the immobilizing security feature, the car will NOT start even if you have the proper coded key.
- It is impossible for anyone to start the car with a knife or anything else for that matter regardless of the security feature because the correct key broadcasts an AM frequency signal that communicates with the car's computer.
Please correct or amend any incorrect or incomplete information I might have posted.
TIA
BTW, did you ever resolve your cooling system leak?

I have a car that is stuck immobilized because of a loose radio wire and it thought someone was att noting to steal car. One big problem I did not set code up and cannot get it from first owner. I am third owner. HELP NEED TO CRANK MY CAR BUT NO CODE. HIW CAN I BYPASS OR RESET CODE
So, the code is set, but you forgot it, and you want to reset it ??...Do you have the INPA diagnostics software ??
E31 radio code
For an E39 you would open the trunk and disconnect the battery, this is suppose to trigger the alarm for 10 min. After that the code is cleared.
