They are interchangable! You will need to get an M3 slave cylinder though.

Thanks for your help funk! I have ZA cdrom and it doesn't talk anything about cruise control? If I remember right you have done the swap. Have you or anyone who has done the swap had issues with the cruise control not working?Originally Posted by funkmasta
Thanks again for your help!!
Mine was non functional, as was all the others I helped with. I dont really know what it is controlled by... I would assume the clutch sensor, or?
My mechanic couldnt get it work either....we r wonderin about it too![]()
I find it hard to believe the ZA CD-ROM doesn't address this...
Don't people like their cruise control?
Read post 154, find an auto (might you have one?), measure the mentioned pins on the CCM and tell me (us). I'll be the guinea pig...

jimmyjoe - Thx for the offer - do you have a meter and a Bentley? Let me get my thoughts together and I'll PM you. Maybe we can sell the info to ZA...
By meter do you mean multimeter? if so yes, and yes. Lemme know what you figure out..Originally Posted by al_r
If using a ZF trans do you need a drive shaft from a zf trans car OR can any 5 spd driveshaft from an e36 be used?
Thanks
Yes, the ZF trans use a different driveshaft than the Getrag trans!Originally Posted by str8 gone

This is my greatest fear with performing the conversion - software.Originally Posted by actp16
Also, the VIN indicates whether the car is auto or manual, right? Would the DMV need to be notified? How about the insurance company?
FYI, when I spoke w/ someone from Bavarian Auto Recycling, they said that the Getrag is for non-M3 cars.

Would a conversion also warrant a new ECU?

No... but to do it "right" you will need to remove the AT wiring harness (which i believe is intertwined with the engine harness).Originally Posted by RacermeX

95 M3 Manual - 3.15
95 M3 Auto - 3.23
96+ M3 Manual - 3.23
96+ M3 Auto - 3.38
is there any other way to find out if a differential is a 3.38 or 3.23 other then the bar code& the last three #s?
i know i for sure have a 3.38 diff in my garage because i helped uninstalled it out of a 974dr auto yellow M3. but the serial number on the bar fades out to white for like the last 4-6 #s...i would like to take a picture of something to help me with the sale, but do not know what to take a picture of for proof of being a 3.38
any help?

Did this swap about 6 months ago on a 95 325i. when i bought the car, it didnt run, ( bad motor ), had no dme, and was auto. so when i did it all and the cruise didnt work, i just figured it was broke ahead of time.
then i got to researching and thinking...
when you ground out the park safety switch from the old AT shifter under the center console, you are essentially telling the system that the car is in park to allow the starter to turn and start the car. well, evidently, the CC ecu looks at this circuit. if you just hard wire the jump of the ground to the park sensor, the CC ecu thinks you hit the brake, and wont engage it. if you undo that jumper after the car is started, cruise works great. my gut tells me that this is essentially the clutch safety switch circuitry from a MT car. so, i just threw a temp toggle switch in that i turn on ( completing the circuit ) when i need to start the car, once running, i turn it off and cruise works. i am planning on permanantly mounting to the clutch switch which will work like oem... makeing you push in the clutch to start the car, and making the cruise dissengage when you hit the clutch, and otherwise it works fine.
hope this helps you all out.

What about the tranny light and the cel?
97M3John - What do you mean what about the tranny light and the cel? I am not following.
Wade,
I'll chime in here, since I'm in the same boat (car) as 97m3john (we're all in IL, BTW).
On OBD II cars, removing/disconnecting the auto trans throws OBD II codes - 'Shift Solenoid A", "Torque Converter", etc.
On my '96, the codes do not get read by my Peake FCX, but will throw a CEL and OBD II codes like P0753, 0758, 0743 and a couple others I can't recall. The auto trans light got removed early on, but the CEL still bothers me.
I'll try the clutch switch wiring this weekend to fix the cruise - gotta pull the console and find 'em...
Thx for your input!
