I've heard that the German HP is more than any other HP is that correct ?
In other word if we have a german car and any other car with the same HP let's say 200 Hp ,, the German car will win is that correct ?
thanx

"HP" = horse power its just a measurement
maybe what you heard its different...like "specifications" on some models than others....
for example...german cars have more horsepower than others thats why it make them faster
but german horse power compared to american, japanesse horse power ARE THE SAME!!! like i said its just a measurement of power!!
No.
http://home.att.net/~numericana/answer/units.htm#hp
The horsepower and the watt are both units of power; there's just a conversion factor between them. The way power is delivered (voltage, etc.) is irrelevant.
A horsepower (hp) is about 745.7 watts (W), but many metric countries use another closely related unit [best abbreviated "ch"] which is nearly 735.5 W.
The horsepower unit (hp) was originally defined by James Watt (1736-1819) as exactly equal to 550 ft-lbf per second (lbf = "pound-force", see below). Since January 1, 1959, the foot and the pound have been defined in metric terms (1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, both exactly). Furthermore, since the third CGPM of 1901, the standard (or conventional) acceleration of gravity has been defined as exactly equal to 9.80665 m/s2, which is thus the "conversion factor" to use to transform units of mass (like the pound, lb) into their common namesakes as units of force (pound-force, lbf): 1 lbf is (0.45359237)(9.80665), or 4.4482216152605 N exactly. Multiply this by the length corresponding to 550 ft (exactly 167.64 m) and you have the equivalence of a horsepower in watts (since a watt "W" is simply a meter-newton per second), namely 1 hp = 745.69987158227022 W exactly. There's (almost) no need to say that everybody usually rounds this up in the most obvious way: 1 hp » 745.7 W.
In countries where the metric system has been around for a while, the horsepower (ch) is a 1.37% smaller unit, called Pferdestärke (PS) in German, paardekracht (pk) in Dutch, hästkraft (hk) in Swedish, caballo de vapor (CV) in Spanish, cavalo-vapor in Portuguese, cavalli vapore in Italian...
The French call it cheval-vapeur (ch) or simply cheval (plural is chevaux). This "metric" horsepower (ch) is defined as 75 kgf-m/s, which engineers used to abbreviate as 75 kgm/s, using the obsolete symbol kgm for a "technical" unit of energy called kilogrammetre or kilogram-meter and worth 9.80665 J. A metric horsepower (ch) is thus (75)(9.80665), or exactly 735.49875 W.
german car manufacturers tend to be conservative with their numbers. Japan also recently revised the way they rate hp since a lot of their higher hp cars weren't living up to expectations.

People say German ponies are more pwoerful than others becuase theyre underrated, while most of the world is overrated.
Two best examples are probably the 335 and the Rx8
The 335 is advertised as 300hp, it putting out around 330hp on the dynos
The Rx8 manual was advertised aroudn 230hp, its only hitting around 200hp on dynos
Germans tend to be conservative so they dont cut into their own sales. I think with euro companies, they offer many different types of engines in the same kind of car, so the dont want 335 sales cutting into M3 sales, etc etc
I dont see as many jap brands offering different engines in the same platform, so they tend to overrate their power because often times the car only has one engine available for it
this thread makes my head hurt
supercharged cobalts and srt-4s are underrated...it has nothing to do with nationality, only the manufacturers interests(insurance, sales, etc)
IIRC the "PS" rating is not even in use anymore. Only kW and hp are.
bacon? bacon...

I know the difference between wheel HP and flywheel HP. Thank you very much.
Did you even read his original post?
So they dynoed the 335 at 275HP on the dyno. RX8 at 200HP on the dyno. Right?
So, unless 200HP is a calculated HP number, the correct way should be...
'The 335 is advertised as 300HP, the calculated dyno HP was over 300HP.
The RX8 manual was advertised around 230HP, the calculated HP on a dyno was around 230HP.'

You were being serious?
I guess it's my fault, as I didn't see where you're from, and it's likely that English isn't your first language.
It sounded like you were being sarcastic about the value of "German horsepower", considering all the fantastical kills that have been written in Kill Stories over the years.
To some of you:
I guess Germans made the 2003-2004 SVT Cobra too, considering they were rated at 390 crank HP, and were dyno'ing close to 380 WHP in some cases. Not to mention the LS1 Camaro - rated at "325 crank HP", yet were dyno'ing up to 305 WHP in some cases.
Germans must have also made the new Z06: SAE Rated at 505 crank HP, yet are putting up to 465 HP to the wheels. At a conservative estimate of 15% drivetrain loss, that's more than an estimated 540 crank HP.
I'm not trying to make a case that German HP is any different from the HP in the rest of the world...but!.....
A 260HP G35 was good for 0 - 60 ~ 6.2. A 330i from the same year had 225HP and ran the same 0 - 60. I'm not sure about the weight differences b/w the two cars, but I can't see it being much. I'm sure a G35 has a power-to-weight ratio advantage, but it doesn't show in acceleration times.
Quarter-mile times and trap speeds are a similar draw. I'd say German powertrains are more efficient maybe
Sorry, 330hp est. to engine, didnt mean to type dyno
basically, the 335 is 330 hp vs the 300 advertised
the Rx8 is closer to 200hp than the 230 sumthing advertised
I didnt have the whp measurements, so i just used bhp measurements. Sorry for confusion.
It might also have to do with taxing. I know you are taxed on engine size in europe, maybe they take hp figures into account so thats why some underrate the power produced

you don't get it obviously, but whatever
German car with the same hp are faster because American cars measure their hp at the shift knob, and Japanese cars measure their hp at the stickers, so after you calculate the power loss through the idiot behind the wheel, you win!
