Anyone with any experience to replace a head gasket on a 2001 X5 4.4 ?? I have been looking for manuals and CD's but no luck so far. I have the parts i need except for the bolts...
Besides starting to take bumpers and exhaust down..can someone please tell me where to start on the engine??
Thank You
why are you replacing the head gasket i know it is a dumb question just wanted to know what is your problem thanks. i will try to help with repair info.
I posted in mechanical issues also...but it wont let me post a direct link lol...
id appreciate any help
what makes you think you need to replace the head gasket sorry but im a little worried about this i have not seen to many v8 need head gaskets this why im asking this question.
i would drop the engine and tranny/transfercase. and perform the work outside the vehicle. just put sandbags on the front radiator support, and start disconnecting the any wiring that is in the way. then remove the front subframe with engine connected.
good luck finding info on that sorry but the service info you want to find is going to be next to imposible to find unless you have a buddie at the dearlership. or acess to dealerspeed.net
yes no hope for me at this point...but there one last chance before the dealer...a shop hear in Cleveland that deal with european cars....i allready talked to someone and they have worked on a Land Rover engine....which is very similar to the one in X5 i heard...so thats my hope if not..then i guess try to find a dealer that will give me a good deal on the labor...
Thank You for the info thou
unless you have major over heating problems, dealerships are known to tell you about problems that you may not have. But if you look up the DIY on how to replace the other bmw head gaskets on other motors, its pretty much the same concept. If your not experienced at working on cars, i really do not suggest doing this at all.
you will need some special tools to re-time the engine.
one more question....
would a service manual for the M62 engine in a 5 or 7 series help me with the retiming?? i know there are a few differences...but the head gasket thing should be about the same right?? ... if i could find the manual for any of those two modesls with M62 engine in them then it would make things a bit easier...
What is the name of that mechanic that you were going to take it to in Cleveland? I live near Warren and have been searching for an independent service shop for mine too. Both my X5 and 540i need the valve cover/intake/valley pan gaskets replaced and I m not sure if I want to tackle that myself.
Go back to the dealer and raise some hell. I see it everyday at mine. They may even go 50-50 with you or cover it all./ If you ahve had multiple complaints on coolant leak. Let them do it.

well i have made a few calls...but nobody wants to tackle with bmw engines....
Right now my X5 is at Dave Walter BMW dealer....they gave me a much better deal on replacing the head gasket $2300 ...as opposed to ganley $4500 ... However to fix the whole problem..i need to pay a whooping $3700 thats if they can fix the head cylinders.....if they can't fix those then my car will prolly be sold for nothing...since those head are about 2k each.....its insane...
Besides that i have talked to some technicians on what my options are regarding ganley BMW....To be honest they could not believe themselves that my car was under maintanance with them.... So far i am looking to see what can be done...Ganley did not even budge when i hit them with all the receipts and what not i have told them to fix on the car...including the water pump which dave walters BMW told me it was broken also.....I am only a college student who apparently has made a mistake in buying this car.....and i dont really have much financial back up....so it will be most likely that i can't pursue Ganley in court to do anything.... so i am just hoping that the cylinder heads are not ovalized beyond repair....However i will do my best to expose Ganley BMW for what they really are and how they look for every opportunity to gain from other people's misery...
Sorry to hear about it Dannyel.
Those heads aren't $2,000 each, by the way. You could easily find a reconditioned set for less than $1,500 (for the pair).
And if you still wanted to swap out your cylinder heads and gaskets, then let me know and I'll hook you up with the how-to.
