I was running the coolant/engine temp test (#7.0) and I noticed that if I left my car in a lower gear with higher revs, the temp dropped over the course of a minute or two to about 84C. If I used higher gears and therefore lower revs (while maintaining the same speed), the temp raised to about 94C. I would have expected the opposite result.

I guess the water pump runs faster with the higher revs and helps to cool the engine more, but I'm no gearhead so maybe someone else can answer this one....
actually i found out later (just re-read this post) that the thermostat is computer controlled. past a certain throttle position or load the computer opens the thermostat to cool the engine more. the high temp is for more complete fuel burn and thus better fuel economy ;-)

    a question ' bout service codes on z3 1.9 16, prerestyling.

An italian guide for those values says that engine coolant temperature is test number 6. but it gives me "strange" values, i think hexadecimal. how have they to be "read"?

in the older clusters that go up to test 15 (s52, m44, etc) the coolant temp is a hexadecimal.

This works on all e36 and e39 clusters maybe more.

Read this over on the e39 board a while back

Pulling this old thread back to life for a question on the testing/coding of the gauges. One of the functions mentioned tells the system the cylinder count for tach. If one changes this from 6 to 4 cylinder, does it then allow a cluster swap from a 6 cylinder into a 4 cylinder and the tach will work? I will test myself, but I recently installed one and the tach wasn't functioning at all, so assumed it was a compatibility issue even though they're supposed to work across the models from what I can see in RealOEM.

You would just need to code the cluster (using NCS Expert program) to the 4 cyl version data inside. What is really important to know is what car the replacement cluster is sourced from, first.
