Help! What parts do I need for new shock install?

I have decided to get a set of Bilstein sport shocks for my 97 328is. The question is this: I probably need to replace the shock mounts too and whatever other hardware is in there. I want to take all the parts to the mechanic so I don't have to pay any big markup.

Can someone tell me exactly what to buy? I'm going to put the order in tomorrow morning.

    Thanks!

    Thumbs up

I installed my adjustable Koni front struts and rear shocks a couple of weeks ago.
For the rear you just need the new shock mounts. You might want to replace the top mounting nuts, but that most likely won't be necessary. The lower bolt should be fine too.
For the front struts, the Bilsteins should have most of the hardware that will need replacing. Check the grease and grease fitting in the mount if the mount isn't getting replaced (mileage dependent).
You might want to save some $ and do it yourself. The rears are fairly easy, and the front isn't too hard with an impact wrench, spring compressors and assistant.

hey russell....if it'll help you any....you might wanna look at this tech tip before placing and order for some stock rear shock mounts. they go out pretty "frequently" with spirited driving...so upgrading em as preventative maintanance wouldn't hurt

Here is a writeup on my suspension install. It has some of the part numbers that you might want to include in your rebuild. Don't forget the alignment. Probably the most important part of the install.

I dont know if your interested but I've done a write-up with pictures of when I replaced my rear shocks. The rear is very easy to do in comparison to the fronts as you dont need anything like springs compressors.

Check it out at www.bmwe36tips.20m.com under the suspension section.
