My friend is letting me borrow his V1 for a trial run to see how it works. I got out to my car all excited, I mounted it on the window and plugged it in.
NOTHING.
It didn't turn on, make a noise or anything. I plugged it into the cigarette lighter, and turned all of the knobs. What am I doing wrong? Please help.
check fuse.

sorry, check the fuse in the little cigi- adaptor thing..
if you have a voltmeter use that to verify that it's getting power.

1 - I assume you're sure there's power to the cig lighter? (You have to make sure by plugging in another device - just because it heats up the lighter thing doesn't mean much.)
2 - The car is on (or the ky is in the right position), right?
3 - You're supposed to turn the larger knob to the right- it's a typical knob like on a radio that clicks on and then adjusts volume from there.
4 - Try it in another car.
It should come on, do an "all lights all sounds" self-test, and then remain on in whatever mode it was in last.

make sure its plugged into the right side of the adaptor
*edit*
I got it to work. The problem? The lighter adapter has rubber on it so that it doesn't fall out. I was not pushing it in all the way. I was afraid of breaking it. Works fine, now to go test it...
Thanks for all of the help by the way.:

My Z3's cigarette lighter's plug is very deep also, you have to really ram plugs into it to get contact. My 12V inverter doesn't work at all, I have to use a 3 way adapter with it which has a slightly larger opening for the plug.

my 95 M3 lighter plug is soooo flimsy, I am hardwiring to the dash just because of that
So is it ok to really force it in there? I mean, its really tight. I'm afraid of breaking it.
Ok, V1 works in both bimmers. Now, I wanna use it in my '73 stang. It won't turn on. Is my lighter not giving enough power?
I'd go through the troubleshooting that XOC listed above, the power should be all or nothing. In an old car the socket can get dirty, or the fuse in the car may have blown.

Would a dirty socket be enough to cut the power?
Negative ground car?

its gotta be a 12v
I don't know. I reached in there with my finger and pulled out a lot of dust. I gave the V1 back, but now I am going to clean out the socket. I am hardwiring mine, so it doesn't matter.
