I have the exact same problem, it happened after I changed my battery. Sorry to thread jack but anyone able to help me too, lol??? Where do I get the Serial/Part/Model Numbers anyway?
This is good to know about codes.
How do you get them for free??
About two weeks ago, the same thing happen to me. So i called the dealer gave them my serial number and they gave me my code. It sounds funny that they would charge for a simple code.

Hoping that this offered service is not "too good to be true", I would appreciate it if someone could provide the code for the BMW Business CD mounted in my 2001 Z3 3.0i. I've tried the dealers, and an online service from the UK, and everyone reports a different number:
Model 7649 272 042/40/44
Serial BP9272X2145237
Other numbers on the sticker: 6512-6-900-603; FD129 Index 01
The dealer provided me with a 5-digit number, while the UK service provided a 4-digit one. The unit was replaced by the dealer before the car was delivered to the original owner, so the radio guide that came with the car was for the original Business Radio with cassette tape, not CD. The manual for the Business Radio/Cassette states that the code should be 5 digits long, so I don't know where to turn.
I'm not "in code" yet, but I want to be ready for when it happens.
/Thanks for whatever help you can provide.
Try this thread. There's a specific way for entering the code depending on if you're in Europe or USA mode.

I just ask our local BMW dealer for a code for my radio in my 2000 Z3 and he said I had to make an appointment and bring it in. I hope someone could give me the code. It's any hour drive to BMW and $80.00 to get the radio to work after battery was disconnected. Thank you

Thanks, Farmer Ted. Exactly what I needed to know. I got into the setup screen for my CD43 and actually set the location code to Canada! Nice to know I can just set it to Europe and input the 4-digit code if I need to.
