Perfect way to upgrade the sound in your ride professionally and properly.
I have two different adapters available for the rear deck of E36's-
6x9" adapter mount fits using factory screws and accepts any and all subwoofer or co-ax 6x9's. BF.com member price $53 shipped fedex
8" subwoofer adapter mounts just as easily and can support the burliest of 8" subs. BF.com member price is $60 shipped fedex
All adapters are hand-made out of 5/8" high-density fiberboard, very strong stuff and provides a very solid mount!
You can buy them directly off of my website link below, or on Ebay under ")-shArk-)". There is also a link to my auctions on my website, as well as pictures of the installed adapters.

Do the 8" adapters fit e36 sedans?
Joe
JoeyC- Yes, they fit and mount in the same manor as the JL Stealthboxes.
Have a visit to my website, there are pictures of 8's installed in a 325. The only year sedans they will not fit are 97-98 due to structural changes. I could make those fit too if I could get my hands on a 97-98 sedan for measurements

Well, my 98 I guess wont fit....and I am a little far, otherwise Id lend you my car. Update us if you get them to fit the 98's..
Joe
Ya, too bad you are not closer........
I'ts really bugging me because I know the only difference is the depth of the under-side deck well. Your car is about 1" deeper from the underside than the earlier sedans.
I will post when I finally have them made.
Anyone out there live close to Hawthorne / Torrance and want a free set of adapters? Just bring your 97-98 sedan by so I can measure out a pair.

could you custom make an adapter for a ten?
Clifton-
I've been asked this many times, and to be perfectly honest a single "adapter" for a 10" just will not sound right.
The proper way to do it is to build an entire under-deck out of MDF (trunk side), and then mount each 10" sub at a 30-degree angle toward the center of the car.
You need a bit of room under the metal decking for the bass to adequately travel up and into the cabin of your car.
It is a sweet way to go, when done right it sounds friggin phenominal and takes up about the same room as two 8's.
here's a pic so you can see what I'm talking about, print this out and take it to your nearest competent custom installation shop- They should be able to built it for $200 or thereabouts.....
*notice how the 10's are mounted upside-down to save room!*

that is awesome!!! thanks man for the info i think im am actually going to do that.. so the subs are firing into the trunk but the rear of the subs are firing out to the cabin? sounds good that way? what about for highs in the back? is there anyway a custom shop could mount like a 4" mid and tweet somewhere in the midst of that rig?
Clifton- Yup, they fire into the trunk. Although at the same time the back of the cone is firing into the cabin through the stock openings on the rear deck.....
It does have the potential to sound freaking awesome, but that is going to be subjective to what drivers you use, what amps you have and how well the rear deck piece was installed.
You could also hang a set of 4" coax in the holes on the rear deck, just mid and high, if you really need highs back there.
It will just take a bit of creative engineering

I'm definetly interested in a set of the 8" Sub adapters. I took my current box/subs/amps out because it was too damn heavy.
I do have a question though.... from the cars you've installed these on, how has the rear deck held up? What I mean is, does it rattle to hell when the bass hits? Basically I'm wondering if I am going to have to sound deaden the hell out of it to stop rattles.
Also, what are your recommendations for free air 8's? I've never really looked into free airs that much.
Thanks.
Spencer-
My rear deck has held up fine, the only issue I had (which is fairly common on E36's) was a buzzing on the rear deck. You may not have to deal w/ it, but if you do it can be easily solved 99% of the time by shoving some foam pieces under it from the speaker hole openings on top. I used a coat hanger to push a few pieces under and it fixed it right up. Not the most professional solution but effective
As for subs, I am using two Cerwin Vega HE-8DVC subs wired @ 2ohms per speaker. Have an alpine V12 bridged to mono on each 2 channel side running them.
I have seen Fosgate, Kicker, Lanzar, Dynaudio, Pioneer and JL 8's all used w/ good results, what i've found is that you want to lean toward a speaker w/ specs of free-air resonance below 45hz (fS), a cone travel greater han 6mm (Xmax) and a stiff cone and surround. A damped voice coil is a plus too, and I personally like dual-voice-coil speakers.
In A free-air application the cone really has to travel far and has no 'damping' which a conventional cabinet provides. Free-air speakers have a tendency to sound awesome to a certain point and plop like hell when the speaker has reached it's travel or "abuse" limit, so go with speakers that are made to take alot of abuse. |Actually if you can find a supplier of drivers for studio and commercial subwoofers you will have an easier time finding a good speaker, since they design them to get pounded.
Unfortunately, most car audio subs are pretty wimpy by design and unless you spend big $$ for high-end brands you might get short-changed. The Cerwin's are some of the beefiest built 8's I've seen for car audio in the sub-$200 /pair range, so you may want to use their specs as a measuring stick.
